New records are set almost daily around the globe and Guinness World Records documents them. Some are fascinating and others are not so cool. #1. Most critically acclaimed RPG (Mass Effect 2)
Mass Effect 2 was released three years after the original Mass Effect. The masterpiece by BioWare received numerous Game of the Year awards for its soundtrack, characters, and writing. However, what you may not know is that the game also holds the Guinness World Records for the most critically acclaimed RPG video game.

In other words, it is the most highly-rated game as of April 6, 2020. The Xbox 360 version of the game received an average Metascore of 96 on Metacritic. It also had 30 perfect 100/100 scores with 97 of the 98 critic reviews giving the game no less than 90/100. The score made it EA Games’ most critically acclaimed title in their 30-year history.
“The game enjoys artistic as well as critical acclaim; the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., USA, featured the game in its 2012 exhibition, ‘The Art of Videogames’”, wrote the Guinness World Records.
#2. Longest-running RPG (Dragon Quest)
Several video game franchises get new entries occasionally, but do you know the longest-running RPG? Dragon Quest was first released on May 27, 1986, and got its latest installment titled Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince on December 1, 2023, making it the longest-running RPG.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is scheduled for release on November 14, 2024, while Dragon Quest 1 &2 HD-2D Remake has a 2025 release. By 2025, Dragon Quest would have been running for 38 years. Guinness World Records handed the game the award on March 5, 2020. That is a record that is hard to beat.
#3. Most prolific RPG (Final Fantasy)
If you are a prolific gamer and have spent over a decade with a gaming pad, there is a huge chance that you have played a game in the Final Fantasy series. The Guinness World Records named Final Fantasy the most prolific RPG on March 6, 2020.
As of that date, the franchise had 61 total installments. Final Fantasy XVI was released in 2023 with more installments in the pipeline. The record-keeping organization also counted installments and non-RPG spinoffs inspired by the franchise which doesn’t carry the Final Fantasy nameplate like Chocobo’s Dungeon.

“Each Final Fantasy game is set within a wholly individual universe, and as such are not related to one another except by recurring motifs, such as the spells, items, and magical creatures,” explained Guinness World Records. “However, there is a single recurring character who is canonically the same individual throughout all games – the bumbling sword hunter, Gilgamesh.”
#4. Most detailed in-game maps (Total Wars)
Virtually all game genres include maps. But have you ever wondered which game has the most detailed map and the size of the map? Total Wars developed by Creative Assembly, Sega, Feral Interactive, and Activision holds that record.
The Guinness World Records said the in-game maps cover the entire Europe and were generated from the real terrain of the area. It is said to have a walking area of 10,000,000 km2 (400,000 miles2).

According to the record-keeping organization, there are other games that have covered a larger area of the Earth like Civilization. However, none of them was as detailed as the Total War series.
“Every battle that takes place in-game uses the local terrain, accurately modeled by comparison with the larger map, the local terrain, and climate,” said the Guinness World Records.
#5. Best-selling RPG (Pokémon)
It is really hard to talk about video game records without mentioning staples like Tetris, Pokémon, and Minecraft. Well, for the best-selling RPG, Pokémon holds that record. The game was awarded by the Guinness World Records on April 30, 2015, after selling 242 million units.

The monster-hunting game is one of Nintendo’s most successful franchises. At the time of writing Pokémon has shipped 483.85 million units according to VGChartz. Pokémon also holds the record as the most successful JRPG of all time. The only non-RPG series that comes close to Pokémon in best-selling is Nintendo’s Mario franchise.
