There is a long list of video game adaptations that will be coming to big cinema screens this year. While original and unique stories are still found in video gamers, translating these stories to appeal to cinema audiences is not always an easy feat.
In recent years, several video game adaptations have turned out to be monster hits. A good example is The Last of Us adaptation. In December 2024, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was launched and has already grossed over $312 million at the box office which pushes the franchise’s lifetime earnings to over $1 billion.
“Woo-hoo! The Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise zooms past $1 billion at the global box office!” announced Paramount through its Sonic the Hedgehog X account. “Thank you to the best fans in the world.”

In 2023, Nintendo’s video game adaptation of the plumber brothers titled The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $1.36 billion at the box office making it the second-most-grossing movie that year.
As they say, one successful act always inspires another. The recent successes recorded by video game adaptations have inspired more filmmakers to turn towards video games for more unique stories for cinema audiences. Without further chitchats, here are six video game adaptations coming to Cinema this year.

A Minecraft Movie (April 4)
Regarded as one of the most-played video games, Minecraft is finally getting an adaptation. Since its launch in 2011 by Mojang Studios the game continues to welcome millions of players annually—the same number that Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures will hope to please. The movie cast includes Jason Momoa as Garett Garrison and Jack Black as Steve. It follows the story of four misfits who are pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld where everything can be built with blocks.

Until Dawn (April 25)
Until Dawn recently got a remake, but that’s not all that it will get. The video game adaptation of the horror-themed game originally developed by Supermassive Games will hit cinemas on April 25. The cast includes Peter Stormare as Dr Alan J. Hill (who many will recognize from the game) and Ella Rubin as Clover. While the movie will be set in the Until Dawn universe, the story will be different and expand the series’ mythology.
-
Devil May Cry (April 25)
It almost feels like forever since the Devil May Cry animated series was announced by Adi Shankar. The wait is over as the series will be available on Netflix in April. Produced by South Korea’s Studio Mir, the series will feature Johnny Yong Bosch (the actor that voices Nero in the game) as the voice of Dante. This is one video game adaptation I look forward to considering my obsession with Devil May Cry.

The first season of The Last of Us received several nominations and awards. But that will likely happen in spring this year.

Mortal Kombat 2 (October 24)
The reimagined Mortal Kombat movie released in 2021 grossed just above $84 million worldwide. Hopefully, the second installment will perform better. Several of the cast from the first movie will be returning for the second run. If you enjoyed the first game, the second installment should easily make it to your must-watch list.

Five Night at Freddy’s 2 (December 5)
If you are familiar with the 2014 point-and-click game, you are likely already familiar with the oversized mechanical teddy bears. Details on the second installment have been sparse. The first adaptation was one of the surprise hits of 2023. The movie grossed nearly $300 million at the worldwide box office making it Blumhouse’s highest-grossing release ever. The second installment was revealed at the 2024 New York Comic-Con.

2 PlayStation IPs announced for adaptation
At the ongoing CES 2025, Sony confirmed that new movies based on Helldivers and Horizon: Zero Dawn were in the works. PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash made the announcement while on stage.
“I’m excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2,” Qizilbash said.
“Horizon is one of our most exciting IPs, filled with so much potential to expand into new categories and genres. The most recent example is Lego Horizon Adventures, which launched this past November – a playful story inspired by the world of Lego and made fully out of Lego elements.
“There is one more Horizon project I’m excited to be able to reveal for the first time here today. Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are at the early stages of developing a film adaptation of the award-winning Horizon: Zero Dawn. Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far-future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen.”
