It’s over a year since the release of Dying Light 2: Stay Human and Techland recently unveiled a new roadmap for the game. While fans of the franchise are eagerly looking forward to Dying Light 3, the roadmap shows that Techland is not done with the sequel.

Earlier this year, Tymon Smektała the Dying Light Franchise Director, shared a poll on the X social media platform asking fans, ”…so please help: if we do DL3, would you be most excited if the main hero was (as a “profession”). Out of the over 5,900 votes cast, 42.8% chose ‘GRE Agent (turned good)’ out of the four available options.

According to the studio, Dying Light 2 sold over 5 million copies in its launch month. Prior to the game’s release, the studio also revealed that it plans to support the game with at least five years of DLC. During its first anniversary, Techland revealed that the Dying Light franchise has sold over 30 million copies—including 20 million copies of the first game in the series.

The long list of updates coming to Dying Light 2

In a new video shared on the game’s official YouTube channel on September 29, 2023, Smektała was also present to unveil the roadmap for Dying Light 2. According to Smektała, the studio recently updated its roadmap for Dying Light 2 to cover October and beyond. Here are some of the planned updates for the game.

#1. New Missions and Activities

To keep the playing experience fresh, Techland is updating the missions and activities in Dying Light 2. Co-op missions, board quests, and tower raids are some of the new activities that will be coming to the game. Also, there will be Replayable GRE anomalies and the return of Tolga and Fatini.

In co-op missions, players can now team up with friends to fight the zombie hoard which should offer a more memorable playing experience. The video took quick glances at what players should expect from the missions and activities updates.

#2. More Graphics Options

Besides adding more content to the game, Techland is also offering graphics improvement in two key areas. The first is the Bloom On/Off Switch. According to what we learned from Unity, Bloom is an effect that mimics the imaging artifact of real-world cameras in games.

When turned on, “it produces fringes of light extending from the borders of bright areas in an image, contributing to the illusion of an extremely bright light overwhelming the camera or eye capturing the scene”.

The second graphics update is the Field of View (FOV) slider which will come to Xbox Series S. Players can now adjust the slider to either zoom out or in and control how much of the environment the camera captures at each point in time.

#3. Quality of Life Improvements

Another important update that will come to Dying Light 2 is quality of life with features like weapon repairing, gear dismantling, and mod dismantling planned for the game. These features will definitely come in handy because they will allow players to dismantle the gears they don’t need anymore and use the parts to upgrade their favorite gears.

#4. Cosmetics and Customizations

Some of your favorite characters will wear a new look when the Dying Light 2 update is officially released. Carrier, Carrier Guild Leader, Wierzbowski, and more free outfits are planned for the game. If cosmetics are something you find interesting in a game, Dying Light 2 will give you more reasons to stick with the franchise.

#5. New Gameplay Mechanics

In line with the sweeping updates coming to Dying Light 2, Techland is also offering new gameplay mechanics that will include new enemy variants, executions/finishers, nightmare difficulty, and nightrunner tools on NG+, and the one that excited us the most, enemies will now drop their weapons.

#6. A flurry of new weapons

The updates would not be complete if fans of the franchise didn’t have more ways to obliterate zombies—and Techland did not disappoint. New weapon types have been added to the game, including rare ones, knives, polearms, and Scorpio.

Some weapons can now be thrown at a horde of zombies and will explode on impact or set the zombies they touch on fire. Players yearning to have more weapon diversity should be more than satisfied with the planned Dying Light 2 arsenal.

#7. Events and Crossovers

So, Dying Light 2 is well on its path to becoming part of your favorite events with Halloween and Winter events planned for the game. When these events are active, elements from the season will be added to the game. For example, during Halloween events, you will see more pumpkins in the game.

Winter events, on the other hand, will offer Christmas scenes including scary-looking snowmen, zombies wearing Santa’s red hats, and lots of Christmas lights. Other performance and gameplay updates planned for the game include:

  • Healing consumables
  • Explosive knives
  • Throwing stars
  • Weather improvements
  • Color grading upgrades
  • Legend levels improvements
  • Text chat
  • Cross-gen saves

#8. Firearms

Saving the best for the last, Techland also revealed that Firearms will be coming to Dying Light 2. This adds to the ranged-killing experience offered by throwing knives and stars. Zombies will still take more than one bullet to go down.

However, it was refreshing to see that you can perform a melee kick or punch that pushes them back when they get too close. The kick or punch also stuns them for a few seconds, giving you enough time to gun them down. According to Smektała, the studio’s work on Dying Light 2 never stops.
