It’s Day 3 of Gamescom and AMD has finally announced the long-awaited frame-boosting FSR 3 technology. The technology that promises insane performance and frame rate boosts will come to Immortals of Aveum and Forspken.

AMD FSR 3 will work in a similar way as NVIDIA DLSS 3 and combine super-resolution upscaling (FSR 2) with frame generation (Fluid Motion Frames) and latency reduction (Anti-Lag+). What is most inspiring is that AMD has made the FSR 3 open to every graphics card on the market.

Frank Azor, the chief architect of gaming solutions and gaming marketing at AMD was on stage to talk about the FSR 3 and other software improvements that will come to the AMD hardware. When asked when is FRS 3 coming out, Azor said it was the most asked question on his socials.

“FSR 3 adds our Fluid Motions Frames technology. What that does is it literally generates frames for you in your game which can double and in some cases triple your frame rate. When you pair it with anti-lag plus, it significantly reduces your latency as well. It’s pretty incredible what the team has been able to accomplish with FSR 3.”

In addition to working on all Radeon graphics cards—including the older generations—it will also work on competitor graphics cards including Intel GPUs and NVIDIA. Besides PC graphics cards, AMD engineers have made it possible for FSR 3 to work on consoles like Microsoft Xbox.

“Everybody should get the benefit of frame generation, of fluid motion frames,” Azor said. “It shouldn’t be reserved just for the small select few people that can buy the latest generation graphics card. That’s not right for gamers.”

Another big announcement that we heard from AMD at Gamescom was the special offer that will see gamers get a Starfield when they purchase an AMD Radeon graphics card, AMD Ryzen processor, or any gaming system powered by both.

“Who wants a free copy of Starfield?” Azor joked. “For a limited time, if you buy a Radeon 6000 or 7000 series graphics card, you will get a free copy of Starfield with it. So, if you’re thinking about buying a graphics card, do it now. That’s an expensive game… So, I think now’s the time to buy.”

While a lot of gamers were excited, others questioned the choice of games that AMD has chosen to premiere its FSR 3 technology. Hassan Mujtaba of WCCFtech criticized both Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum for their poor graphics performances and mostly poor reception.

“I personally think it would’ve been a great choice if Starfield, Resident Evil IV, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, The Last of Us Part I, and The Callisto Protocol had been selected as the launch platform for FSR 3,” wrote Mujaba.

Regardless of what critics may think, AMD has a long list of studios that it is working with to bring FSR 3 technology to more games. Some of the studios include Ubisoft, Massive, Square Enix, Focus Entertainment, and CD Projekt Red.

When is FSR 3 coming to gamers?

Azor did not stop with the announcement of the FSR 3. He also mentioned that it will be in the hands of gamers in early fall. Subsequently, gamers will get Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum patches that will bring the technology to both games.

“A few more weeks ahead, you are going to see these patches come out and you’ll be able to take advantage of these massive frame rate games.”

At the moment, FSR 3 has been confirmed for 10 other titles. However, AMD is working with a bunch of developers. Azor confirmed that Unreal Engine will have a plugin for FSR 3.

“Once [they] do that, you’re going to get an absolute [lot of games] that are going to be integrated in FSR 3,” Azor said. “So, expect FSR 3 support to grow very rapidly from here, just like FSR 1 and FSR 2 did.”

Azor teased that fluid motion frames can now feature in every Direct X 11 and DirectX 12 games. Previous attempts had required integration with the game which limited the amount of games that could get the feature. However, the engineers at AMD were able “to put fluid motion frames into hyper RX.

“That means pretty any DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 running the AMD adrenaline hyper RX software is going to get the benefits of fluid motion frame interpolation and generation,” Azor said.
