Rather than holding on to the console war that it has lost, Xbox is restructuring its business to be more of a game provider—and it wants to ensure the ways players can access Xbox games are unhinged. Thanks to a court ruling on the Android marketplace, Xbox will launch its app on Android in November.
On Thursday, October 10, 2024, Xbox President Sarah Bond shared a message on X expressing how Xbox players will soon be able to purchase and play their favorite games on mobile through the Xbox App.

“The Court’s ruling to open up Google’s mobile store in the US will allow more choice and flexibility,” Bond wrote on X.
“Our mission is to allow more players to play on more devices so we are thrilled to share that starting in November, players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android.”
Mobile remains the biggest gaming platform, trumping the number of console and PC gamers. For example, in 2023, an estimated 2.8 billion people played mobile games which is about 83% of all gamers.
An early foray into the mobile game market means Xbox has a chance to cut a bigger portion of the pie before its major competitors (Sony and Nintendo) makes the transition too. The message was widely applauded by Android users.
Kinda Funny podcast host Parris commented on Bond’s post saying, “Big news and happy to see this, let me play my games where I want to play them and this is a huge step in that direction”.
What is not immediately clear is what type of games will be available on the Xbox App or whether the games will be downloaded or streamed. Another question that many people yearned to be answered is whether Game Pass Ultimate will come to mobile.
