Armored Core VI: Fires Of Rubicon Started Strong But Falling Through The Cracks

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon was released on Friday 25 August 2023. That means regardless of which part of the world you reside, you should have access to the game at the time of writing this post. Developed by FromSoftware Inc. and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is a mech-based vehicular combat game.

“In ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON, players will assemble and pilot their own mech with 3D maneuverability to move freely through three-dimensional fast-paced missions,” explained part of the game’s official blob.

The game’s story weaves around the discovery of a new substance on Rubicon 3, a remote planet. Apparently, the new substance was supposed to be an energy source that “was expected to dramatically advance humanity’s technological and communications capabilities”.

Unfortunately, instead of being the revolutionary energy source that humanity hoped for, the “substance caused a catastrophe that engulfed the planet and the surrounding stars in flames and storms, forming a Burning Star System”.

After 50 years, the substance showed up again on Rubicon 3, “a planet now contaminated and sealed off by the catastrophe”. However, the interest in the substance has grown with different factions looking for it for keeps. Working as an independent mercenary, your role is to overpower the other factions and take possession of the substance.

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon has mostly positive review

Armored core vi metacritic score

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon has received mostly positive reviews, leaving it on the green zone. At the time of writing this post, the Metacritic score was 87 from fifty-six reviews. However, that score will likely swing in the coming weeks as more media write their reviews.

VideoGamer was one of the reviewers who gave the game a perfect score saying, “Armored Core 6 Fires of Rubicon is a masterful return to form for the series that incorporates the modern design philosophies of From Software. It’s a dystopian world with a brutally gorgeous aesthetic and refined gameplay elevated by exceptional boss battles. Any fan of the series new or old will find something to love”.

IGN Portugal scored the game 90 saying, “Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon isn’t one for half measures. It’s a game that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t waste a single minute getting me into the cockpit and letting me live out the fantasy of piloting a giant Mech. The story may not leave its mark, but the customization system won’t leave my mind any time soon, constantly inviting me to create a new solution to the game’s missions and a new way of approaching combat”.

After sweeping the 2022 Games Award with Elden Ring, the bar was set really high for FromSoftware which explained some of the harsh criticism that Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon received. While the customization and combat system were widely praised, the story was generally criticized for lacking memorability.

Also, some critics highlighted how repetitive the game easily becomes once you have maxed out your armor. At some point, the game feels noisy and chaotic with flashes from rocket explosions filling the screen. Nevertheless, it is still a great game for anyone who’s just inducted into the world of mech games.

Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon will feature FromSoftware Easter Eggs

Moonlight Light Wave Blade

FromSoftware has an uncanny tradition of including the Moonlight Greatsword in virtually all the games developed by the studio in recent history. Fans of the studio have already discovered the weapon in Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon.

In the new game, the weapon goes by the name ‘Moonlight Light Wave Blade’. The news was shared on Reddit by r/armoredcore and gave credit to John Payne and EJRaven_ACO on Twitter. A video shared by EJRaven_ACO showed the symbolic weapon in action.

The Moonlight Greatsword first appeared in King’s Field and was an important part of beating some of the game’s puzzles. Also, the sword has featured in other games from the developer including Bloodborne (through The Old Hunter DLC), Elden Ring, and Dark Souls. It has also appeared in previous Armored Core games.

Modders have already added CJ from GTA: San Andreas to Armored Core 6

CJ from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has become a meme of some sort—and modders favorite. The character appeared in Dark Souls, Sekiro, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Interestingly, it took less than 24 hours after release to mod CJ into Armored Core VI.

The making of CJ into a mech was credited to modders TKGP and Dropoff. The mecha-CJ is yet to appear on NexusMods. However, what Rich Stanton of PC Gamer did not fail to notice is how parts of the character were distorted or twisted into a weapon.

Stanton also discovered that a host of other games now have the CJ mod including Street Fighter 6. While the distortion of CJ is concerning, some gamers may find it more fulfilling crushing enemy mechs as a human—or at least, what appears so.

After seeing some of the streams of Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, one thing that was clear is that it is the sort of game where you will die—a lot. It is the kind of game where the strategy that worked in one mission may fail woefully in another. You have to pause and re-strategize to beat every new challenge.

The game encourages this experiment by giving gamers the option to change their mech’s assembly after each death. Finding the right answer to any challenge is always a eureka moment. It would be interesting to see what the stats would be for Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon after the launch weekend.
