Ubisoft announced today that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has attracted over 3 million players in just a week of its release. The numbers seem to justify the multiple delays that the game went through before its eventual release.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows also shattered a couple of other records including being the biggest Ubisoft day one ever on PlayStation Digital Store. The latest installment in the series is also the second-highest-grossing in the history of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

According to Ubisoft, players of Assassin’s Creed Shadows have already spent over 40 million hours in the game. Beyond the game’s commercial success, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is also one of Ubisoft’s highest-rated games in recent years.

On Metacritic, the game garnered an average of 85 on Xbox, 82 on PS5, and 78 on PC. It is predicted that Shadows would likely sell 6 million copies in its first month. The numbers so far are already a huge success compared to other Assassin’s Creed franchises.

The reason is that other titles in the franchise were released during the holiday season when spending is usually higher compared to Shadows which was released in the first quarter of the year.

Valhalla crossed 8 million in its first month while Odyssey shipped only 3.4 million copies within the same period. However, Odyssey stands out in the history of the franchise with over 40 million players—although this doesn’t equate to the number of copies sold.

A lot of gamers did not give Shadows a chance, especially after the controversy over the true history of Yasuke and his true impact on the history of Japan. Ubisoft previously claimed their characters are historically accurate until historians started poking holes in Yasuke’s true story.

After selling 3 million copies in 7 days and considering the cultural accuracy controversy that came before its release, do you consider Assassin’s Creed Shadows a success? Share your thoughts in the comment box below.
