I grew up with cartoons, and one of my favorite series was Avatar the Last Airbender. I loved it not just because of its numerous comic reliefs but because it was packed with scientific knowledge. Learning that Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance would be coming to PS5 and PS4 this fall left me in stitches.

Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance

According to the announcement trailer description, Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance will allow players to “relive the epic adventure of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series”. Interestingly, the upcoming game will allow fans to play as either Aang or one of his friends.

Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance is developed by Bamtang Games and published by GameMill Entertainment in partnership with Nickelodeon (the owner of the Avatar: The Last Airbender IP). I was also chuffed to know that the upcoming game will run on Unreal Engine.

What to expect from Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance

The announcement trailer of Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance was just under a minute and didn’t show much. I guess the developer wants to leave as much as possible to the imagination. However, one thing I figured from the trailer was that fans will explore all four nations: water, earth, fire, and air.

In terms of playable characters, I noticed that fans can play as Aang—who would likely be the main character. Also, fans will get a chance to play as Zuko, Katara, and Toph Beifong. Although the announcement trailer did show Sokka at some point, it is unlikely that he will be a playable character.

I am not sure, but I want to make a wild guess based on what I observed from the less-than-a-minute trailer. Since players will explore the four different nations, they would likely have to switch to the character that possesses the element of the nation they want to explore.

For example, when exploring the water kingdom, the player will use Katara, Zuko for fire, Toph Beifong for earth, and Aang for air. Perhaps, Aang will be behind the scene learning the different elements as you explore with other characters. It would be interesting to see how they would tie it together.

Expect to solve lots of puzzles

One feature that made Avatar the Last Airbender memorable was how Aang and his friends were always solving puzzles. I remember that in one episode they were captured being transported in a ship. Aang hadn’t learned water bending at that time.

However, someone (can’t remember who now) came up with the idea that they were burning coal to power the ship and that coal comes from Earth. Immediately they started bending the coal and used it to escape.

There was another episode that Katara was locked in a prison. She started running so she could sweat. Once she sweated enough, she started bending the sweat and used it to slice the metal bars and escape from her prison—that was before she learned blood bending.

There were several other instances in the series the wits of Aang and his team were tested. Likewise, expect lots of puzzles in Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance. There was an instance where Toph lifted a boulder out of the way in the trailer.

There was another scene where Aang used air to move platforms around to align so that he would cross. I expect to see more of such puzzles in the game—from those as easy as moving platforms to more complex ones.

Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance stays true to the series

I also loved the fact that Avatar the Last Airbender: Quest for Balance maintained the look and feel of the series. The characters still look cartoonish and the world looks like something that was hand-painted. Keeping all these elements will help to juggle the memories of fans of the original series.

I also expect this to be a family-friendly game with little or no blood and gore violence. Although no fight scene was revealed in the announcement trailer, there were glimpses of characters that would likely be the bosses in the game.
