The 2024 edition of the BAFTA Games Awards was held on Thursday, April 11, 2024, to celebrate “the very best games of 2023 and the talent who made them”. Some of the biggest releases of last year were nominated in 18 categories, but Baldur’s Gate 3 came out on top as the most favorite release.
“I still can’t believe we’re standing here,” said Swen Vincke, the CEO of Larian Studios, as he climbed the podium to collect the studio’s win while surrounded by his colleagues. “A lot of people put a lot of heart and soul into making Baldur’s Gate 3, so this is amazing – thank you Bafta, thank you everybody.”

Three other games—Alan Wake 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Viewfinder—all won in two categories each. SpecialEffect was honored with the BAFTA Special Award which is one of the highest honors presented at the show. The gaming charity was recognized for its outstanding work to “enhance the quality of life of severely physically disabled people through access to games”.
Now in its 20th edition, the 2024 BAFTA Games Awards was held at a ceremony hosted by Phil Wang at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. In addition to winning in four of the BAFTA categories, Baldur’s Gate 3 also won the EE Player’s Choice Award which is decided solely by public vote.
BAFTA Games Awards winners are decided by the organization’s 1,200 game members who are experienced professionals working in the industry. The members selected the 60-game longlist back in December last year as well as the nominations and winners in two categories: Best Game and British Game.
The winners of the remaining categories were selected through votes by specialist industry juries. BAFTA Games Awards is part of the London Games Festival which runs from April 9 – 25 across the UK capital.

The majority of the BAFTA Games Awards 2024 nominees and winners have either been nominated or won other awards since last year. After losing the Best Indie Game award to Sea of Stars at The Game Awards 2023, Dave the Driver won the Best Game Design at the BAFTA Games Awards 2024.
“Thank you so much for giving us this award, it means a lot to us – we just beat Zelda,” joked the game director Jaeho Hwang when he climbed the podium to receive his award. “As everyone knows, last year was one of the biggest years in gaming history, so I was just happy to stand next to these incredible games – but now I’m bringing this heavy mask back to Korea!”
