While most physical releases comfortably sit on one to two CDs, Baldur’s Gate 3 will come on 4 CDs. The Deluxe Edition of the game on Xbox which is priced at €79.99 has received updates that have further bloated its size beyond the earlier 3 CDs target.
According to the Larian Studio’s product website, the Deluxe Edition of the game on Xbox will contain “a retail copy of Baldur’s Gate 3 across 3 discs”. However, in a recent update, Michael Douse, Larian director of publishing mentioned that the CDs may be increased to 4.

“Apparently the Xbox retail version of Baldur’s Gate 3 is going to be 4 discs now,” Douse wrote on X on March 1, 2024. “Might be 3 again. Very dynamic situation.”
While Douse didn’t appear confident about the exact number of discs that the Xbox Deluxe Edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 will have in his earlier tweet, he was more confident in an update that he posted on March 4 where he quoted his earlier tweet. Douse also explained the reason for the 4 CDs.
“The Xbox retail version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will indeed have 4 discs, since we’re 500mb over the limit for 3,” Douse said. “Only option would have been to cut some content out but that didn’t make sense, so confirming 4.”
The first wave of shipment has already been sold out and is expected to ship in Q1 2024, according to the product website. Providing an update on that, Douse said “It’s possible the wave 1 March 25 date will slip to first week of April” because of the new development of having the games on 4 discs instead of 3.

Asked by @hypersomniacPhD if the wave 1 shipping of the PS5 discs will also be in the first week of April, Douse said, “It should be before that, but don’t have an exact date yet”.
The PlayStation physical release will have two discs while the PC release will have just one. Going back memory lane, notable games have been released on four or more CDs. For example, the 2004 Everquest 2 was released in a massive 10-CD pack while the Riven game was released in 1998 with 5 CDs. However, CD capacity has become larger over the years—but so has games too.

Wave 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3 is expected to start shipping in Q2, 2024. However, it is unclear if the expected delay in shipping of the first wave will affect that.
