October is a crazy month for gamers, and I don’t envy anyone who plays video games for a living at this time. The reason is that the month is packed with some of the biggest video game titles revealed earlier this year—and some gamers will really have a hard time keeping up.
While it may be almost impossible for anyone to keep up with all the games, we have prepared a trimmed-down list of games you should not miss. If you have time to play a maximum of 9 games this month, then this list is for you. Also, if you have time to play far fewer numbers, make sure you pick from this list.
What is particularly interesting about October is that there is a ‘big title’ for everyone, regardless of your favorite playing platform—whether it is PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Nintendo Switch. It is a particularly packed month for Switch gamers.

Some of my favorite AAA titles that were released earlier on PlayStation or Xbox like Batman: Arkham Trilogy and The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope will both come to Switch. Also, Scorn, which was earlier available to PC gamers will come to PS5.
9 of the biggest video game titles releasing October 2023
Before we dive into our list, it is important to mention that I only considered fresh video game titles. In other words, I did not include games that have been released before but are being re-released on a new platform.
That is why Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1 which will be released on October 24 is not on this list. Also, I did not include VR games on this list for some odd personal reason.

However, it is important to mention that over 14.2 million VR headsets were shipped in 2021, 19 million were shipped in 2022, and Statista expects at least 21.7 million units to be shipped this year. Without further chitchats, let’s look at the biggest video game titles releasing this month—in the order they will be released.
#1. Assassin’s Creed Mirage (October 5)
Assassin’s Creed Mirage is not the first game releasing in October. However, it is one of the biggest video game titles that you should not miss. Developed by Ubisoft Bordeaux, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be the 13th major installment in the series and a successor to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla which was released in 2020.

It follows the story of Basim Ibn Ishaq’s transition from a petty street thief to a full member of the Assassin Brotherhood. The game is often described as a return to the franchise’s roots with a focus on stealth and linear storytelling. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be released on October 5 across all major consoles including PS5|PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
#2. NHL 24 (October 6)
If you are a fan of the NHL, it will interest you to know that the next installment in the series is scheduled for release on October 6. Developed by EA Vancouver and published by EA Sports, NHL 24 is the 33rd installment in the series. Exciting new features have been added to the game including a new system that will make it harder to score goals.
The Exhaust Engine used for the game renders a true-to-life image that makes the game of hockey pop. Just like NBA 2K24, crossplay has been added to NHL 24. That means you can play with friends regardless of the console they are playing on—as long as they are the same generation.
#3. Forza Motorsport (October 10)
It’s always hard for me to pick between Forza Motorsport and Gran Turismo. However, if the former strikes a stronger chord for you, then get ready for some fast-paced excitement on October 10 when the new Forza Motorsport launches. One reason I love Forza (and Need for Speed) is that they allow me to enjoy the thrill of speed in cars that I may never own.

Forza Motorsport is a Microsoft exclusive that will launch on Xbox and PC—no hard feelings for PlayStation owners. Developed by the trio of Turn 10 Studios, Playground Games, and Sumo Digital, Microsoft hopes to dominate the racing sim video game world with this release which will get consistent updates and content over a long time.
#4. Lords of the Fallen (October 13)
Don’t mistake the upcoming Lords of the Fallen video game with the one released in 2014. While the former was developed by the duo of CI Games and Deck13, the upcoming release was developed by Hexworks. In the dark fantasy action RPG, you will be playing as one of the fabled Dark Crusaders.

Your quest through the vast open world has one purpose: to overthrow Adyr, the demon God. The video games promise an arsenal of hundreds of weapons as well as challenges that will make you sweat. It will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
#5. Sonic Superstars (October 17)
Put on your racing shoes in readiness for the all-new Sonic experience called Sonic Superstars. Sonic was one of the games I enjoyed playing on the 16-bit Sega Genesis in my primary school days—and I am really hyped about this one. While Sonic Superstars will see the furry blue creature race through familiar territory, the side-scrolling game will be embellished with 2.5D visuals.

Even more inviting is the local multiplayer mode which can be enjoyed simultaneously by up to four players using Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tail” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose with each having their unique abilities. Developed by the trio of Sega, Arzest, and Sonic Team, Sonic Superstars will launch on October 17.
#6. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (October 20)
Swinging in on October 20 is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which will for the first time in the history of the franchise feature two Spider-Men in one game. Insomniac Games promises to utilize the full power of the PS5 on this one. It will see the introduction of web wings which will combined with web swings to build up speed.

Familiar villains including the Lizard and Venom will feature in this one. However, my main attention will be on Kraven the Hunter. The game has an expanded map and a lot of new features. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will release on October 20 and Insomniac has made sure that it’s not your regular sequel. It is going to be a PS5 exclusive—no hard feelings for Xbox gamers.
#7. Super Mario Bros. Wonder (October 20)
You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of video game IPs that boast the same fan base size as Mario. Nintendo has planned a flurry of Mario games and one of them is dropping this month titled Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The 2D side-scrolling game has lots of new elements including three new powerups.
Also interesting is the fact that Nintendo has expanded the number of playable characters from just Mario and Luigi to include Princess Peach, Yoshi, and all other protagonists in the Mario franchise. The game will also come with special skills that can be equipped which will completely change your playstyle. Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be a Switch exclusive—no hard feelings for PlayStation and Xbox gamers.
Ghostrunner 2 (October 26)
Developed by One More Level, Ghostrunner 2 is described as the hardcore sequel to the critically acclaimed, lightning-fast slasher set in a post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk world. While the first game introduced players to a blend of first-person parkour and ninja skills, the sequel promises to be more intense.
It was set a year after the events of the first game with Jack returning to take on a league of violent AI cults. If you are a fan of cyberpunk-type games, save October 26 on your calendar because that is when Ghostrunner 2 will be dropping. It will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Alan Wake 2 (October 27)
Last on our list but definitely not the last video game with an October release date is Alan Wake 2. The survival horror game developed by Remedy Entertainment using Northlight Engine will see the best-selling thriller novelist, Alan Wake, trying to escape an alternate dimension where he has been trapped for 13 years.

Gamers can also take the role of Saga Anderson and explore the game in two distinct single-player stories that can be played in any order. Equipped with firearms and a flashlight, Wake will battle various enemies and traverse different environments to survive. One of the mechanics in the game I am excited to see is the “Mind Place” which can be accessed when playing as Saga.
