The years of hard work that the team at Game Science must have put into Black Myth Wukong is paying off. On August 23, 2024, the developers announced that the game had sold 10 million units across all platforms and exceeded 3 million concurrent players across all platforms.
For context, one of last year’s biggest releases, Spider-Man 2, sold 2.5 million copies in 24 hours and went ahead to ship 5 million copies in 10 days. Another interesting point to note is that while Spider-Man 2 was a $70 game, Black Myth Wukong is sold for $60.
This may seem like an unfair comparison because Spider-Man 2 was exclusive to PS5 while the record set by Black Myth Wukong was across several platforms including PC (Steam and Epic) and PS5.

Nevertheless, hitting 10 million sales in 3 days is a crazy number. According to Geoff Keighley, the creator of The Game Awards, Game Science has earned around 600 million in revenue in three days (however, we believe that amount would be a bit lower when you take out platform fees).
Besides the number of copies sold, Black Myth Wukong has attracted 2,415,714 concurrent players on Steam making it the most-played single-player game on the platform according to SteamDB. It has also toppled Palworld to become the second most concurrently played game on the platform.
What is even more interesting is that the record was hit on a weekday. We predict the game will attract several hundred more concurrent players this weekend.
Black Myth Wukong has inspired a spike in PS5 sales in China
Consultant Danilo Camilo revealed that PS5 consoles are selling out across China. The country’s largest electronic store Huaqiangbei is reportedly struggling to cope with the surging demand for the console—and it was all because of Black Myth Wukong.

The report claimed that the surge in demand has led to the resurgence of the pandemic-era scalping and reselling which Sony said was now behind them. According to Camilo, the sales boom extends to PC and components.

This year has seen a couple of surprise successes including Palworld from Pocketpair, an indie title that attracted over 25 million players within 2 months of release. However, the game has lost over 90% of its players.
