Video games are getting more expensive and some analysts believe GTA 6 will be a “turning point” for the industry. Several studio heads including Capcom president have spoken out about how games are too cheap and why developers should be allowed to charge more.
Inflation has seen the cost of triple-A game development rise astronomically with some games in that category costing over $250 million to make. One video game analyst said there is “hope” that GTA 6 would cost $100 which would give other developers a chance to raise the base price of their games.

The State of Video Gaming in 2025 by Epyllion’s Matthew Ball has made several projections about the video game industry and how things will likely change if GTA 6 sticks to its 2025 release window.
GTA 6 is likely to sell well regardless of its price. The analyst believes this will give Take-Two the privilege to bump up the game’s base price. This bump will likely help the developer recover some of the spiraling costs that go into video game production.
Looking back, Take-Two was one of the first publishers to raise the base price of games from $60 to $70 in 2020. That price has spread across the industry. The excuse they gave at that time was the transition to the current-gen consoles—and there is no incentive not to do it again.
To recoup the investment that goes into the making of a game, some developers are turning to microtransactions and offering players incentives to spend more beyond the base price of the game. For example, many games offer a more expensive early access window which allows gamers to start playing up to three days before the game’s official release.
While developers have their reasons for pushing for a bump in the price of games, players also have theirs for insisting that the price remain the same.
