Cliffhanger Games Is Making Black Panther Single-Player Action-Adventure Game

On Monday, July 10, Electronic Arts announced that its new studio Cliffhanger Games was developing a single-player action-adventure game based on Marvel’s Black Panther. The announcement came through a blog post published on the company’s website.

“As we celebrate the 57th anniversary of Black Panther’s comic debut this July, we’re thrilled to announce Cliffhanger Games, a new triple-A development studio based in Seattle, is working on an original, third-person, single-player Black Panther game in collaboration with Marvel Games,” the company wrote.

The company also disclosed that its mission is to create an expansive and reactive world that will allow gamers to step into the skin of Black Panther and experience what it feels like to be Wakanda’s protector.

Not much is known about the new Black Panther game except that it will be led by Kevin Stephens who was previously the studio head at Monolith Production—the studio behind Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Cliffhanger Games has formed a team comprising industry veterans who contributed significantly to titles like Call of Duty, God of War, Halo Infinite, and more.

“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game,” said Stephens. “Wakanda is a rich Super Hero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”

The news shared by EA shows that Cliffhanger Games will work with Marvel Games on the new project. The team is particularly concerned about crafting “every aspect of Wakanda, its technology, its heroes, and our own original story with the attention to detail and authenticity that the world of Black Panther deserves”.

On his part, Stephens said, “It’s an incredibly rare opportunity to build a new team around the values of diversity, collaboration, and empowerment”.

The news did not disclose the platforms that the new Black Panther game will launch as well as the production timeline. Late last year, EA announced that it is working with Marvel for a minimum of three new games. The first of those games was the Iron Man title which will be handled by EA’s Motive Studio.

“Each of these games will be their own original stories set in the Marvel universe,” EA disclosed at that time through a blog post announcing the collaboration. Just like the current announcement about Black Panther, the companies did not share further details about the collaboration or hint about the superheroes that may be involved.

Nevertheless, the series of collaborations shows Disney trusts EA to properly represent its big intellectual properties in the gaming universe. Disney is expanding its library of Marvel games—a feat that should delight gamers.

EA also used the opportunity to advertise career openings for experienced developers willing to join the team at Cliffhanger Games. The company believes that “the foundation of any great story is to build an experienced team with diverse voices and perspectives”.
