Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition Announced But PS5 Players Are Furious

CD Projekt Red has announced the release date for the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition. The Ultimate Edition will be released physically and digitally on December 5, 2023, in select markets across the globe. Also, it will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

This will mark the first time that the physical copy of the game will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Only PS4 and Xbox One previously got a physical copy of the game. Sadly, the Ultimate Edition will not be available for the last-gen consoles—just as Phantom Liberty wasn’t.

According to reports, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition will come with digital elements for some platforms instead of having every game content boxed. For example, the Xbox Series X|S version will be available on three discs which will contain the base game and the Phantom Liberty expansion.

Coming to the PS5, only the base game will be available on disc. Consequently, players will be required to download the expansion separately. This has not gone down well with PS5 players. The boxed PC version will also have GOG code for both Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty.

According to CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition will also include some of the previously released digital items that are featured in the “My Rewards” program, available to all who register. The company recently said that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 25 million units as of October, which puts it ahead of The Witcher 3 in terms of sales numbers. It also said Phantom Liberty sold 3 million units in its first week.

In September, Gabe Amatangelo, Cyberpunk 2077 game director said CD Projekt would not make further updates to Cyberpunk 2077 because the studio was moving on to other projects, including a sequel for the game which has now entered development at CD Projekt’s North America studios.

PS5 players are dissatisfied with Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition

The joy that followed the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition was soon replaced by gloom for PS5 players after CD Projekt Red Global Community Director, Marcin Momot confirmed that Phantom Liberty will not be on disc for PS5.

“With the Ultimate Edition, Phantom Liberty is on the disc,” Momot wrote on X before later adding, “Just to clarify, it’s on the disc on Xbox. PS5 has a code included and PC is downloadable as well”.

Does it play? (@DoesItPlay1), a group that works to ensure games and hardware remain accessible now and always by testing commercial releases to ensure they work internet-free wrote, “Hardly an Ultimate Edition when you don’t include all content on the disc. Why does the PS5 version only come with a download code?”

Scorne (@canOVOYMCMB) also shared this sentiment. In response to Momot’s clarification message, the X user wrote, “That makes no sense at all. The ultimate version should contain all released content on the disc. Why are PS5 players at a disadvantage, but the Xbox version includes all content on the disc?”

Scorne went further to say, “Just a little reminder: The PS5 disc has a capacity of 100GB and would probably even fit on one disc, if not then two. Whereas the Xbox disc only has a capacity of 50GB and definitely needs two discs.”

CD Projekt is yet to issue a public clarification on why they had to package the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition for PS5 and PC with digital codes instead of having everything on the disc.

“The reason for the difference in how the Phantom Liberty is included in the Ultimate Edition is due to technical requirements specific to each platform,” a Spokesperson for CD Projekt Red told VGC.

All the updates that Cyberpunk 2077 has received to date will be available in the Ultimate Edition which makes it sort of a one-stop shop for a total Cyberpunk 2077 experience. The price for Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition has not been revealed yet.
