Bungie released a statement on Monday 27 November 2023 announcing that Destiny 2’s next expansion titled The Final Shape will now be released on June 4. According to the developer “The Final Shape needs more time to become exactly what we want it to be”.

“The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together,” the developer wrote in a short message published on its website. “We want to honor that journey, so we’re taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision, one that we hope will be remembered and treasured for years to come.”

After the company’s recent layoffs, a report surfaced that claimed The Final Shape will be delayed while the studio’s next full game titled Marathon will be delayed until 2025. The Monday announcement adds credibility to that report.

“Naturally, this change brings up questions about our upcoming release calendar,” Bungie wrote. “Season of the Wish begins tomorrow (today) and will extend until the launch of The Final Shape in June. While the majority of content and narrative for Season of the Wish will run from late November to February, as originally planned, the team is adding new content available for all players to jump into until the launch of The Final Shape.”

Back in August, Bungie announced The Final Shape and gave it a February 27, 2024, release date. However, there was a sharp turn of events when Bungie announced layoffs in October. Several other Sony Interactive Entertainment studios have also announced layoffs.

The studio later announced that they knew they had lost the trust of players but working hard to restore it. Bungie has outlined several new quests and “three new PvP maps dropping in May” that will keep players engaged as they wait for the release of The Final Shape.

“In February, this will include new weekly progression-based quests called Wishes, and the launch of Moments of Triumph with unique rewards. Next, we’re moving Guardian Games up to March with a refreshed focus on class vs. class competition. Then, beginning in April, we’re delivering a two-month content update available to everyone called Destiny 2: Into the Light, which will prepare players for their Guardian’s journey into the Traveler.”

Bungie will release more The Final Shape details in April

Bungie said it is aware that fans of the franchise are eager to get their hands on The Final Shape. While the studio acknowledged that delays are not fun, they also said they were “excited to have the extra time needed to bring our vision for The Final Shape to life for all of you”.

The studio will share further details about The Final Shape in April. Some of the details they hope to share include the game’s all-new gameplay as well as “the significant content additions currently in development”.

“The Final Shape looms—a nightmarish calcification of reality into the Witness’s twisted design” read the description that came with the reveal trailer of the game. “Embark on a perilous journey into the heart of the Traveler, rally the Vanguard, and end the War of Light and Darkness.”

During a Destiny 2 showcase that happened in August, Bungie disclosed its plans to replace the current seasonal structure of the game with an episodic one.

“What’s really important about episodes is that it’s a really big shake-up to what we’ve been doing,” said Robbie Stevens, the assistant game director. “Instead of providing four seasons a year, you are going to get three larger episodes. And so, the first three episodes in this coming year are called Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy, coming right after The Final Shape. The theme for the year is going to be all about the consequences and aftermath of The Final Shape.”

We are not sure if the plan to replace seasons with episodes will still go as scheduled following the official delay of The Final Shape. We just have to wait to find out.
