Disney Mistakenly Shared Star Wars Outlaws Release Window, But Edited It Out

On Tuesday, January 2, Disney Parks’ editorial content director Thomas Smith shared “24 things coming in 2024”. The list doubled as a sort of New Year message that gave fans a hint of “what’s coming to Disney Experiences in 2024”. One of the things mentioned on the list was Star Wars Outlaws.

“This year, more than ever, we’re bringing your favorite stories to life in fun, innovative ways at our theme parks and resorts, on our cruise ships, and through our amazing products and experiences around the world,” Smith wrote.

Item number 22 on that list was Star Wars Outlaws game. According to an IGN report, the post had earlier mentioned that the game will release in late 2024. However, Ubisoft later reached out to them to say that the “late 2024” earlier mentioned in the Disney post has been corrected.

Well, at this point it was already too late because various other blogs had flown with the original “late 2024” release window. Before now, Ubisoft and Disney have been mute about a specific release date for the game. The most that fans of Star World Outlaws know after the reveal was that it was given a 2024 release window.

The game was first revealed on Xbox Showcase 2023. Soon after, it got a gameplay reveal which showed off about 10 minutes of the game. Star Wars Outlaws is being developed by Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft. When it is eventually released, it is expected to be on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S, as well as PC.

What kind of game is Star Wars Outlaws?

Star Wars Outlaws is an action-adventure game set in the Star Wars universe. The precise setting is between The Empire Strikes Back (Episode 5) and Return of the Jedi (Episode 6). Massive Entertainment said the choice of the setting was deliberate because it was the time when the criminal underworld thrived.

“The game lets you explore distinct planets across the galaxy, both iconic and new,” wrote Smith. “You can risk it all as Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix. If you’re willing to take the risk, the galaxy is full of opportunity.”

The game’s official website also mentioned that Star Wars Outlaws will be “the first-ever open-world Star Wars game”. Star Wars Outlaws will feature a mix of ground combat and spaceship battles. Your survival will depend on mastering the art of chasing, evading, and attacking.

“Take on high-risk, high-reward missions from the galaxy’s criminal syndicates,” explained a section of the key features on the game’s official page. “Steal valuable goods, infiltrate secret locations, and outwit enemies as one of the galaxy’s most wanted. Every choice you make influences your ever-changing reputation.”

Star Wars Outlaws may have been delayed

Before Star Wars Outlaws was officially revealed, it was reported that Ubisoft was planning to release an open-world Star Wars game in early 2024. However, by October, the studio said that they had delayed a “large game” that was previously planned for a March 2024 release.

Although the studio stopped short of naming the game that was delayed, many believe it was Star Wars Outlaws that was being referenced. As of now, we cannot tell of any other Star Wars game that is under development by Ubisoft.

At a time when more games are making use of procedurally generated worlds, Star Wars Outlaws developers mentioned that the game will take a more “handcrafted” and “manageable” approach. One planet in Star Wars Outlaws is estimated to be about the same size as two or three regions in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
