Before the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, some, particularly those against “forced DEI” in video games, predicted that the entry would flop. Some also poked holes at the LGBT tag on the game’s Steam Page. However, all the numbers suggest that the game’s launch has been a “success” so far.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Did Enough To Silence Critics?

The latest entry from EA and BioWare launched into the Top Seller chart on Steam, knocking Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 off the top. Released on Thursday, October 31, 2024, the game quickly reached a peak concurrent player count of 77,465 within 48 hours of release according to SteamDB.

That number means Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now the most successful BioWare release in terms of the number of Steam concurrent player count. The record was previously held by Mass Effect Legendary Edition which drew in a peak 59,817 concurrent players.

It is also one of the most concurrently played single-player EA games. Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s concurrent player count trumped that of Star Wars Jedi. However, it still remains behind the numbers pulled in by The Sims 4 (96,328) and Need for Speed: Heat (86,196). But those numbers are well within reach.

“Perhaps, the best compliment we could hope for is to hear how you made this game your own, and what it means to you, for years to come,” Busche said.

Creative director John Epler called Dragon Age: The Veilguard “the most incredible project” he has worked on in his 17-year-long career.

“These characters – this story – is going to make you laugh and cry, just as we did when we were making it, and it’s been a tremendous privilege to get to be a part of this team,” Epler said.
