In August 2024, Game Informer was shut down after operating for 33 years and its website went dark. Leading to the shuttering was a round of layoffs from its parent company GameStop. However, the veteran game publication magazine has now been given a second chance by Gunzilla Games, a blockchain game developer.

“After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer,” was the message that greeted fans who tried to visit the website at that time.

“From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on.”

At the time of writing, the website was back online and had already started churning out dozens of articles daily. The website returned on March 20, 2025. The last post on the website before that was on August 1, 2024.

Message from Game Informer Editor

On Friday, March 21, 2025, Game Informer’s editor Matt Miller posted on the revived website, acknowledging that the entire team has returned. Miller also confirmed that the print version of their magazine will be returning in the coming weeks.

“I was devastated last summer when Game Informer was shuttered by our prior parent company, and so was the rest of our team,” Miller wrote in the Letter from the Editor. “Not only did we really relish working together, but we also thought we were doing something valuable in contributing to the conversation around the gaming hobby.”

“Over the months since, two remarkable things happened. The first is that Game Informer as a brand and an outlet was purchased and given a new lease on life. The second is that the entire team that was working together at Game Informer’s closure has returned, from editorial to production and beyond. The entire team. Seriously – I’m still pinching myself.”

Miller highlighted how the return of the entire Game Informer team will ensure that they “move forward with confidence” since every member of the team (both past and present) is part of their 30-year legacy.

“How did this all happen? After first touching base with our team and ensuring our interest, the team at Gunzilla Games secured the rights to Game Informer,” Miller wrote.

“Game Informer now operates under an entity called Game Informer Inc., and our intent is to continue to focus on highlighting the coolest games, celebrating the history and legacy of the gaming industry, and shining a spotlight on the creators and players who are charting its future.

“We wanted to get the site back up and running for all of you as soon as we could, but there’s a lot more on the way in the coming weeks, including the return of Game Informer’s print magazine. Our intent is to bring back the magazine bigger and better than it was before, and add a host of membership and subscription benefits, including an expanded scope to our videos, streaming, and feature coverage, while also broadening the range of experts and partnerships we tap to bring you those perspectives.”

Game Informer will continue to operate as an independent editorial entity which means the team will have sole autonomy on decisions around what they’ll cover and how they will do so without influence from Gunzilla Games.
