One popular way of judging a game’s success on Steam is the peak number of concurrent players it garners over time. Consequently, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut has now beat God of War to become PlayStation’s second-biggest launch on Steam.
According to data culled from SteamDB on Sunday, May 19, 2024, Ghost of Tsushima has hit a peak concurrent player count of 77,154. It hit that target just three days after release. At the time of writing, it was the 18th most concurrently played game on Steam.

So far, the only Sony-published game that has had a higher concurrent player count is Helldivers 2 developed by Arrowhead Studios. Helldivers 2 peaked at 458,709 concurrent player count a few weeks after release and has maintained a decent player number ever since.
However, that is understandable because Helldivers 2 had a lower price and was launched simultaneously on PS5 and PC, the first Sony-published game to launch on a platform that was not PlayStation.
Ghost of Tsushima developed by Sucker Punch Productions, on the other hand, first launched on PS5 and PS4 in July 2020. It only recently got a PC port with the help of Nixxes Software. There are rumors that more PlayStation exclusives will get a similar treatment soon, including God of War: Ragnarök.
Before the release of Ghost of Tsushima, God of War was the second most successful PlayStation game on Steam with 73,529 peak concurrent players while Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered was third with 66,436 concurrent players. Below is the list of the top 10 PlayStation games on Steam based on concurrent player count.
- Helldivers 2 (458,709)
- Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut (77,154)
- God of War (73,529)

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut has been mostly positively received with the majority of its over 8,500 reviews on Steam being positive. Last week, Sony announced that Helldivers 2 sold 12 million copies in its first two weeks making it the publisher’s fastest-selling title ever on PS5 and PC.

The success of Helldivers 2 continues to question the relevance of console exclusivity of games. Recently, Xbox executives have come under fire for sending some of their exclusives to rival platforms. However, they emphasized that it was a great idea from a business perspective.
