Years after its release, GTA 5 continues to attract a massive number of players, hitting new milestones that most recent releases rarely come close. The latest Take-Two Interactive earnings call on November 6 shows how much of a success their titles have been.
It was revealed that GTA 5 sales have surpassed 205 million units in its 11-year lifespan. This is 5 million more units sold than the company’s Q1 2025 earnings. That means GTA 5 sales accounted for nearly half of the franchise’s total sales.

According to the data from Take-Two, the entire GTA franchise has shipped a cumulative 435 million copies. Take-Two also praised GTA Online which has remained a money spinner for the company and continues to get regular updates despite its age.
The company said GTA Online continues to be one of the “largest contributors” to their net bookings despite expectations of a decline. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said GTA Online has continued to “outperform expectations” due to the frequent updates and “sustained engagement”.
The release of the next installment in the franchise, GTA 6 will likely cannibalize the sales of GTA 5. Take-Two reiterated that GTA 6 is still on track for a fall 2025 launch. Zelnick discussed the process of deciding the release date for their products during an interview with CNBC.
“There are elements that you can actually measure, for example, the number of bugs in a title, and every one of us will make sure we have as few bugs as possible before we launch,” he said.
Rockstar has a reputation for delaying games after giving release dates. That must have inspired someone to ask Zelnick if he was confident that the next installment in the franchise would not miss its fall 2025 release window.
“Well, there is slippage in the industry and we’re not immune from that,” he replied. “However, we narrowed the timing because we are highly confident in that timing.”

The publisher also announced that the Red Dead Redemption series has shipped more than 92 million units. The second game in the franchise, Red Dead Redemption 2 is still considered one of the greatest single-player video games of all time and accounted for more than half of the total franchise sales.
