I had slept off and woke up with the anticipation of watching GTA VI later today only to realize that Rockstar Games was forced to release it early because of leaks. That sucked. However, the trailer has now raked up over 38 million views in just 6 hours.

Rockstar had scheduled the premiere for Tuesday, December 5. However, they were forced to release the trailer on Monday when an anonymous X account uploaded a low-res and heavily watermarked version of it early.

The account was eventually banned from X and shortly after, Rockstar released the official trailer and posted a message on X saying “Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube”. The message has garnered over 900k likes at the time of writing this post.

GTA VI has been given a 2025 release window. The trailer has confirmed the rumors that part of the game will take place in Vice City—where the fourth main installment of the game was set. It also confirmed some of the previous leaks that have been circulating online.

“GTA VI continues our effort to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere”.

Rockstar Games parent company, Take-Two Interactive, through a press release revealed that GTA VI will be initially released on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is currently no mention of a PC release. However, it would not be the first. GTA IV and V were first released on consoles. A PC port only came later.

GTA VI announcement has become the most-liked gaming post ever

The post which announced that GTA VI trailer will arrive on December 5 garnered over 1.8 million likes in 24 hours to become the most-like gaming tweet. That number has surpassed 2 million at the time of writing this post.

The post that held the previous record was also the post about Rockstar that confirmed the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto game will arrive in December. Back in February 2022, Rockstar confirmed that the next GTA installment was actively in development but did not provide further details.

By September of that year, the company suffered from one of the worst high-profile data leaks that saw over an hour development footage of GTA VI shared online. The leaks gave players their first look at what the sequel of what has now become the most-anticipated game would be.

However, one notable alteration was that Jason’s image was different from the one that has been circulating the Internet while that of Lucia remained the same. But can we accuse them of changing Jason when they have not released anything prior to this? Nevertheless, the presence of Lucia in GTA VI will make her the first female protagonist in the history of the franchise.

Given the long release window that Rockstar has set for itself, they may want to revamp some of the features that had earlier leaked.

GTA VI developers are furious about trailer leaks

While most fans didn’t mind getting the GTA VI earlier than scheduled, senior gameplay animator Javier Altman expressed his frustration about the leak that led to the publication of GTA VI Trailer 1 earlier than scheduled.

“I was hoping to watch this for the first time tomorrow along with my fellow teammates and coworkers,” Altman expressed his grief on X. “I feel we deserved that moment. I’m proud of what we are making. Enjoy the trailer everyone.”

“Little bit earlier than expected, but here it is folks!” wrote associate principal animator Amy Hatley. “So proud of everyone working on this game, it’s going to be amazing.”

Hopefully, with the first trailer out there, hackers and leakers can give Rockstar a breather to keep working on GTA VI without further ruining their moments with leaks. By the way, here is the trailer below if you haven’t seen it yet.
