The Wolverine game was announced back in 2021 during the PlayStation Showcase in September, together with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. At that time the studio said the title was in “very early development”.
Bryan Intihar was a guest on the Kinda Funny Games podcast where he was asked questions about the recently released Spider-Man 2 and the next plan for the studio. One particular moment in the podcast that got tongues wagging happened around the 1 hour and 10 minutes mark.
Intihar was asked by the host Greg Miller if the upcoming Wolverine game and Spider-Man titles will exist in the same version of Marvel’s universe. “They’re all 1048”, Intihar said, referring to the Marvel universe that they share.

Since both games would be created in the same universe, the hosts of the podcast were curious to know why Wolverine cameo did not appear in Spider-Man 2. When the question was thrown at Intihar, his answer was cryptic, as he desperately tried not to give away too much information.
“There was a decision not to do it,” Intihar said. “I think for us, we wanted to let that team cook, and who knows what the future holds? But right now, let’s let them do their thing.”
The information available at the moment suggests that Wolverine will be a standalone title with Cameron Christian and Brian Horton as the game directors, the creative leads of Spider-Man: Miles Morales. During the announcement of the Wolverine game, Ryan Schneider, head of franchise strategy and studio relations at Insomniac said:
“In the vein of our Spider-Man games, our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit. Even though Marvel’s Wolverine is very early in development, from what I’ve seen of its emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay, the team is already creating something truly special.”

There is a huge expectation for the Wolverine game
Considering the success of the two Spider-Man games and the Miles Morales spinoff, a lot of fans will expect nothing less in terms of storytelling and gameplay from the Wolverine game—whenever it is released. Spider-Man 2 has been a record breaker with PlayStation announcing it as their fastest-selling game ever.
While speaking at Kinda Funny Games Intihar noted this fact saying he understands how disastrous it was to tease fans and end up not meeting their expectations. Therefore, he was cautious while talking about Wolverine.

Although both Spider-Man and Wolverine are under Insomniac’s umbrella, they are handled by different teams—which also means the outcome could be different. Nevertheless, a lot of fans have kept their hopes high about Insomniac games based on their recent strings of successes.
However, one thing I do know is that notwithstanding that Wolverine and Spider-Man would exist in the same universe, the crossover is likely not going to be huge—at least for the first game. Come to think of it, both characters have different tones—but that doesn’t mean they can’t co-exist.
Besides Wolverine, there are rumors that Insomniac is working on a third game based on a Marvel IP. Some want to believe it may be a Venom spin-off that the Spider-Man 2 narrative director recently talked about. However, with every launch success, Insomniac will want to dream for more.
With the huge faith that fans have in them, I am sure that Insomniac will deliver yet another story-driven masterpiece in Wolverine. By the way, there are reports that Spider-Man 2 will be bundled with the new PS5 Slim when it launches in November.
