Although the PS5 was released almost 3 years ago, it is yet to touch the sales numbers recorded by the PS4. Available data as of Q2 2022 shows that 117 million units of PS4 have been sold, making it Sony’s second best-selling console behind PS2. To date, only 25 million PS5 consoles have been sold. So, is making a PS5 Pro a good decision for Sony at this time?
Going through the history of the PlayStation console, it is easier to understand why the rumors about a PS5 Pro have become rife in recent months. Apart from PS1, every other console generation got an upgrade within two to four years after their release.

For example, PS2 was released on 4 March 2000 and by 29 October 2004, the PS2 Slimline debuted. PS3 was launched on 11 November 2006 and got the Slim and Super Slim upgrades in 2009 and 2013 respectively. Likewise, after its release on 15 November 2013, PS4 got the PS4 Pro on 7 September 2016.
Perhaps, this consistent timeline is what must have triggered the rumor that PS5 Pro is around the corner with some speculating a 2024 release window. Although Sony is yet to make an official statement on PS5 Pro development, Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming claims the console is “100% in development”.
What the rumors are saying about the PS5 Pro
@TCMF2 shared what was claimed to be the Spec Sheet for the PS5 Pro on X (formerly Twitter) and also mentioned that it was due in the holiday of 2024. According to the rumor, the PS5 Pro development was codenamed Project Trinity. Other details about the upcoming console shared by the X handle include;
- Chip name: Viola
- CPU: 8 ZEN 4 Cores (Custom) – Could be Zen 5 by launch but most likely 4 | clocked over 3.6 GHz
- GPU: 30 WGP / 60 CUs | RDNA 3 or 3.5 | clocked at 2.7Ghz | 96 ROPS
- RAM: 16GB GDDR6 (some DDR5 possibly for OS) | 18 000 mts (mega transfer per second)
- SSD: Potentially Larger and Faster
- Chip: TSMC 5nm or 4nm
- Potentially significantly improved Tempest Engine
Another reason why the PS5 Pro rumor makes sense is because Microsoft hinted that PlayStation and Xbox will likely not release a next-gen console before 2028. This timeline was sighted by IGN in one of the legal documents filed by Microsoft over its plan to acquire Activision. Considering the expected long gap, before the next major console release, an upgrade to the PS5 makes logical sense.
PS5 Pro concept designs
The rumors have been accompanied by concept images that the posters claim would be how the PS5 Pro would look like when it eventually hits the market. Some of the concepts are awe-inspiring and you would wish that Sony would take a cue from them while others are simply meh. Here are some of the concept designs that we have seen so far.

1. Briefcase with zipper
One of the most popular concept designs that is massively shared on the Internet is the one that looks like a briefcase that is partially unzipped. It has been rumored that the PS5 Pro will be slimmer and the designer of this concept made sure that the concept fit into the picture.
2. PS5 Pro controller concept
The wild imagination of some consumers was captured by @Chaosxsilencer who shared what is claimed to be a concept PS5 Pro controller with a screen. The X user even turned on WWE on the controller. However, this is likely just a wild display of editing skills. With the release of the PlayStation Portal, this is highly unlikely for this to happen.
3. Boxy and Octagonal concept design
In another post, @Chaosxsilencer shared two images that appear to have been generated using AI. The first imagined the PS5 Pro as a rectangular box without any fancy designs. The second imagined the rumored console in the shape of an octagon.

4. Oval design concept
One of the PS5 Pro concept designs that blew our minds away was the one by Letsgo Digital shared by @Gamblerfeeds. The concept had an oval shape that looked really cool. It also had a slot at the front where the disc would go in while the vents moved to the bottom. It looked like something out of space.
If truly, a PS6 is expected in 2028, Sony would most likely want to fill the gap with a revamp of the PS5. However, most of the rumors and concepts cycling the Internet are just unrealistic. By the way, Which of the PS5 concepts caught your attention? Share your thoughts in the comment box below.
