If you have admired the PSVR2 from afar but unable to make a purchase because of the price, it will excite you to know that Sony has slashed the price of the virtual headset by $150—or $200 if you go for the Horizon: Call of the Mountain bundle.
The most interesting part is that this is not a timed offer or promo. No, the new price has come to stay. While Sony did not announce the exact date the price regime will take effect, many are predicting it will likely start on March 1, 2025.

“For those of you who have been waiting for the opportunity to jump into the PlayStation VR2 and experience what this generation’s innovative virtual reality system has to offer, we are happy to share some great news!” announced Isabelle Tomatis on PlayStation Blog. “Starting in March, we’re reducing the recommended retail price (RRP) of PSVR2.”
This is welcome news at a time when the price of everything game-related is going up. However, it may also be a sign of the deepening trouble that Sony has with shipping the virtual headsets on its shelves.
Why Sony is discounting the PSVR2
Earlier last year, it was announced that Sony had halted PSVR2 production until it cleared stock. Perhaps, the price cut is a sign that they have yet to clear their stock and looking for new innovative ways of doing so.
In the earnings call early last year, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot expressed disappointment at the performance of Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR saying the company would not be investing more in VR games.
At that time, GameBaba Universe predicted that the only way Sony could clear its stocks was by heavily discounting the product. We also mentioned that the reason they might be reluctant to discount the product at that time was because they had not sold enough to cover their initial investment.

Eventually, Sony released a PC support for the PSVR2 using a $59.99 dongle. However, players have complained that the PC experience is not at par with the PS5 experience—especially with the absence of support for the native eye tracking feature and HDR.
On the good side, the library of PSVR2 games has grown over the years, unlike what it was when the hardware first launched. This is another incentive that may lure those on the fence for so long to finally make the purchase.
“With recently released hits like Alien: Rogue Incursion, Skydance’s Behemoth, and Metro Awakening VR, and exciting new game launches on the way including Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk, it’s never been a better time to jump into the action with PS VR2,” said Tomatis.
A recent update to the PSVR2 added a low-latency hand-tracking feature. That means developers can now create games where players can physically move their hands to control their character for more intuitive controls.
