Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth Has A Getaway Subgame Where You Can Cool Off

Once most AAA games begin, they just keep going and you will rarely get time to catch your breath. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth wants to change that by creating a sim subgame where players can chill and catch their breath.

“Too many street punks getting you down?” read the video description. “Time for the getaway you deserve? Dondoko Island is the destination for you.”

Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a creation from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, a video game developer within the Japanese video game company Sega. The subgame throws players into Dondoko Island where they get to design their neighborhood, customize their home (including crafting furniture), or simply go fishing.

The subgame was revealed at the Xbox Partner Preview that aired on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth previously called the Yakuza series is scheduled to be released on January 26 next year.

Releasing just before that on November 9 is Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. The game is a spin-off that throws more light on Kazuma Kiryu’s perspective after the series of events that occurred in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. It will be released on PS4| PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

More details about Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth Dondoko Island

To learn more about Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Mike Nelson of Xbox Wire caught up with Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Chief Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto. During the conversation, Sakamoto was asked if Dondoko Island would be available early in the game or unlocked midway through the game.

“Dondoko Island will be unlocked through a side story that will be available at the start of Chapter 6,” Sakamoto replied.

A new gameplay trailer of Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth was showcased at the Xbox Partner Preview that gave more insight into what players should expect from Dondoko Island. The Island is an entire game of its own and is set on a beach resort.

In one scene, we saw Ichiban Kasuga riding a dolphin into the ocean and back while rocking a beach shirt and shorts. While on Dondoko Island, players can complete a ton of mini-games including fishing, catching butterflies, and collecting resources.

With the collected resources, you can visit a shop and purchase unique furniture or craft one yourself. It is entirely up to the player to decide how they want their dream home to look. Since Dondoko Island has a life of its own, the activities are not limited to gathering resources and building stuff.

You can make friends with memorable characters—including a parrot. Your goal is to make your Island befitting to all kinds of tourists and give them a memorable experience. Occasionally, some uninvited guests may invade your Island and you will have to “beat sense into them”.

According to Sakamoto, Dondoko Island “is independent from the main story so you will be able to play through at your own pace”.

How players should play Like A Dragon series

Apart from Dondoko Island, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth will also feature a long list of minigames. The Sujimon Battle will see players “collect enemies and battle them”, according to Sakamoto. There is also another minigame where players will get on a dating app and try to find a match.

Since a lot of Yakuza games have already been released and there are tons more waiting to be released, some players may want to know the right order to play the games. Sakamoto suggested that players should first play Like A Dragon Gaiden and remember Kazuma Kiryu’s story before jumping on Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

However, those who have the luxury of time are encouraged to go back and enjoy all the previous games in the series. This should give them enough backstory about the characters as well as help them to better understand the franchise.
