Rogue State Evolution maker, Little Red Dog Games, was reportedly closed on Monday, January 22, 2024. The indie game company was famous for making some of the most positively reviewed strategy games. The circumstances that led to the closure are still unclear.
Little Red Dog Games headquartered in Potsdam, New York City had about 27 employees. The closure announcement was first shared by Blazej Zywiczynski who worked as the COO and executive producer in the studio.
“Little Red Dog Games are joining the layoffs party,” Zywiczynski wrote on LinkedIn on Friday, January 26, 2024. “The whole company closed its doors on Monday, 22nd of January 2024. The entire team, from juniors to the CEO is now looking for new challenges.”

Accompanying the announcement was a list of all the former employees of the company and their portfolios. Since the studio operated mostly remotely, Zywinczynski mentioned that all the former employees of the studio could remotely work anywhere.
“All of the [former employees] are pros at working remotely over multiple time zones,” Zywinczynski wrote. “I have a neat spreadsheet with all the info about them, like shipped projects, where they are based, and so on. Please reach out to me or them directly if you can offer any kind of help or would like to learn more about these amazing people.”

Former Little Red Dog Games employees are actively hunting for new roles
Founded in 2013, Little Red Dog Games promoted unconventional working ideas in the game industry including no crunch, remote work, flexible working hours, and emphasis on work-life balance. They also allowed their members to travel for annual retreats and game conventions.
“We’re strategy game developers making dark comedies that are mechanically unique and socially aware,” was how the studio described their philosophy. “Our players tell their own stories as they dive into a sandbox, explore different strategies, and interact with the satirical worlds’ that we have constructed around a given set of themes.”

GameBaba Universe spotted a few posts from the studio’s former employees. One of them was from Jaz Woodroffe who worked in the studio as a UI artist. Woodroffe reminisced about the experience and appreciated her former colleagues.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the closure of the studio I last worked at, Little Red Dog Games,” wrote Woodroffe on LinkedIn. “This wasn’t the ending we envisioned. The hilarious and well-written stories were meant to be read, the beautiful and engaging art was meant to be seen, and the fun and strategic gameplay was meant to be played. I’m immensely grateful for the invaluable experience Little Red Dog provided me, and I will never forget the creative journey we went on together.
The other post that we found was made by Chris Bohlen who worked in the studio as a 3D artist. Bohlen had been with the studio for about 2 and a half years.

My availability is immediate, so if anyone has any leads on any companies in need of a skilled and experienced 3D Artist, please don’t hesitate to DM me.”
GameBaba Universe spotted a post on LinkedIn that claimed the closure of Little Red Dog Games came down to “the arrogance and incompetence of those in charge”. We could not verify this claim at the time of writing this post.
