The ongoing Los Angeles fire is the worst the region has seen in years. Residents of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and its surroundings woke up on January 7, 2025, to the devastating wildfire that has continued to burn out of control. As of January 14, there are five active fires with twenty-five casualties, more than 12,400 destroyed buildings, and over 200,000 people forced to evacuate.

Drought, low humidity, and hurricane-force winds have continued to fan the Los Angeles fire leaving authorities helpless. The cause of the fire is still unknown and arson has not been ruled out. The two biggest and deadliest of the fires are the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades and the Eaton Fire in Altadena.

It could take months to fully understand the level of catastrophe caused by the Los Angeles fire. Several video game makers have poured out their support to the victims and the responders of the Los Angeles fire through social media posts.

Sony Group donates $5 million to Los Angeles fire

Leading the list of video game corporations that have donated in support of both victims and respondents of the Los Angeles fire is the PlayStation maker. In a post shared on LinkedIn, Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that it is donating $5m to support first responders, community relief, rebuilding efforts, and assistant programs for the affected.

“Los Angeles has been the home of our entertainment businesses for more than 35 years,” said the company’s president and COO Hiroki Totoki and chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida in a joint statement.

“We will continue work with our local business leadership to determine how best Sony Group can support relief and recovery efforts in the days ahead.”

Insomniac supports devs with resources

Joining Sony to announce donations are its first-party studios. While Sony’s support was broad, Insomniac focused more on supporting its developers who the Los Angeles fire has directly impacted. Insomniac noted that the fire has directly affected friends, families, and colleagues.

“Safety is paramount in a situation like this,” the company shared in a statement posted on LinkedIn. “As such, we are focused on supporting Insomniacs with resources to help them through these challenging times, together with Sony.”

“We are also offering support alongside Sony to the local communities and neighborhoods that have been directly impacted by donating to the LA Fire Department Foundation, CCF Wildfire Fund, World Central Kitchen, and the Pasadena Humane Society.”

Naughty Dog announce donations

Joining its parent company to announce support for victims and responders of the Los Angeles fire is The Last of Us maker, Naughty Dog. The Studio said they are deeply saddened by the wildfire which has impacted neighbors, friends, family, and their devs.

“While we have been working hard to support those of our own team that have been affected, we also want to support the community we are part of,” the studio shared on LinkedIn.

“We are joining Sonu in making a donation to support wildlife relief efforts. Our studio is donating to the LA Fire Department Foundation, World Central Kitchen, CCF Wildfire Fund, and the Pasadena Humane Society.”
