Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is scheduled for October 20 release but the hype is over the roof. On Sunday, October 15, 2023, Insomniac and PlayStation released the launch trailer, a day before media houses were allowed to publish their reviews.

“Nine months after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, we find Miles still enlisting Peter’s help, but when the mysterious symbiote appears, Peter and Miles’ relationships are put to the test,” read the trailer synopsis. “Peter begins to change as he gains symbiote powers, and Miles, Mary Jane, Harry, and the rest of the friend group must help Peter while also facing the impending threats from a cast of new villains like Kraven, Lizard, Sandman, and Venom!”

Spider-Man 2 is a PlayStation exclusive and will only launch on PS5. A few months ago at the San Diego Comic-Con, Sony revealed a special Spider-Man 2 PS5 console bundle that had parts of the console and the DualSense controller covered by the symbiote.

The Spider-Man 2 launch trailer highlighted how deep the crack in Peter’s relationship with his friends had become after he was infected by the symbiote. In one scene we heard Peter telling Mary Jane, “I’m the hero here, not you”.

In the next scene, we heard Miles asking, “The hell is going on with Pete?” However, those who have seen previous Spider-Man movies will understand Peter’s sudden attitudinal change once he was infected by the symbiote. From the movies, we learned that the symbiote has a way of making someone aggressive. It sort of brings out the worst in anybody.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launch trailer also showed the heroes fighting Sandman, a villain that has not been seen in earlier game trailers. The strength and size of the villains explained why it had to take 2 Spider-Men to bring them down.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 reviews have been full of praise

While many will have to wait until October 20 to have a feel of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, prominent media houses are already enjoying early access. Game reviews started dropping on Monday, October 16, 2023, a day after the launch trailer was released.

GameBaba Universe did not get a copy. However, we sieved through close to a hundred reviews from different media to see how they felt about the game. The feeling was almost the same. Many of the reviews praised Insomniac for taking the best part of the previous game and improving on it as well as adding new mechanics that exploit the full power of PS5.

Another area that received massive accolades was the impressive storytelling and cinematics. Insomniac appears to have outdone themselves in those areas. However, it appears players will have to wait for a couple of years to experience the concluding part of this epic saga.

At the time of writing this post, the game had garnered an average score of 91 on Metacritic, based on 122 critical reviews. This score makes it one of the top-scoring games among all the releases this year. However, it is likely that the score will swing in the coming days and weeks, especially after the official release of the game.

Several media houses gave the game a perfect 100 score including VGC which said “Spider-Man 2 is one of the most confident sequels we’ve played in years”. So far, the game’s worst rating was 80, which, according to Metacritic standard, is Positive.
