It has been a year of big flops and big surprises. Sega just announced that its latest RPG developed by Studio Zero and published by Atlus in Japan has sold 1 million units in the first 24 hours of its release—which is no small feat.

Metaphor: ReFantazio Sold 1 Million Units In First 24 Hours

“Atlus’ completely new fantasy RPG “Metaphor: ReFantasio” has surpassed 1 million copies sold worldwide,” the company announced on X.

According to a press release from Sega, the number of copies sold consists of “the total number of physical unit shipments and downloadable units sales”. In contrast, it took Persona 5 a month to ship 1.5 million units. Persona 5 was also published by Atlus.

Before the release of Persona 5, Atlus’ most successful franchise was Persona 4: Golden, released in 2014. It sold 800,000 units and is now available on current-gen consoles.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is one of the highly-rated games on Metacritic this year. It received an average score of 93 from 37 critic reviews on PS5. The score dropped to 92 on Xbox Series X and 91 on PC.

Metaphor: ReFantazio takes place in The United Kingdom of Euchronia, where the king’s assassination brings chaos and unrest to the land. One fateful day, a magic known only to the king called the Royal Magic is invoked, and the world becomes embroiled in a Royal Tournament for the throne. You and your partner, the fairy Gallica, must find a way to break the curse placed on the prince that the kingdom believes to be dead.
