Late in July, Meta launched Super Rumble, a first-person shooter game, on its social VR platform, Horizon Worlds. The game was the company’s way of showcasing how much it has gotten better in gameplay and graphics.

Super Rumble allows players to choose one of six superpowers prior to each session. This gives players the chance to find a strategy that will outwit their opponent. The available superpowers include;

  • Super Punch (delivers powerful attacks)
  • Super Net (freezes opponent)
  • Super Tough (lowers damage taken)
  • Super Ammo (no reloads)
  • Super Jump (launches the player into the air)
  • Super Dash (gives player incredible speed)

Super Rumble is a fast-paced game that can be enjoyed simultaneously by two to six players. Each match lasts for five minutes. The game also introduced a novel integrated system of rewards, quests, and levels.

Meta has been struggling to attract and keep players on Horizon Worlds using full-featured mini-games. This strategy worked for Rec Room which is now a popular social VR platform on traditional screens and VR headsets.

Meta has made sweeping changes lately including making its Quest VR headset open to Roblox, an online gaming powerhouse that directly competes with Horizon Worlds. However, that decision has expanded the choice of social VR platforms now available to Quest users to include;

  • Horizon Worlds
  • Rec Room
  • Gym Class
  • VRChat
  • Roblox

Why Super Rumble is gaining attention among Quest users

Super Rumble was developed by Ouro Interactive, Meta’s internal game studio. While it is not the most phenomenal VR game ever made, it is still miles better than what players are used to on Quest. Although the game is noncomplex, it is still enjoyable.

The game was built using new tools (possibly advanced tools) that made it possible for the developers to add external elements into Horizon Worlds which helped to expand the gameplay possibilities and interactivity as well as visual complexity. These elements made Super Rumble more immersive and increased the chances that players would want to replay the game.

One thing that Super Rumble was able to accomplish is giving Quest users something more engaging to do in the metaverse rather than just watching events—which has been the boring norm. Also, Super Rumble was able to enhance the sense of presence, allowing players to explore the 360-degree environment.

Another interesting feature of Super Rumble is that players can use their Meta avatars as well as interact with other participants. Candice Clark of Fagen Wasanni Technologies believes “this creates a virtual sense of togetherness” since players can compete and communicate with each other.

This also means that a player can bond and play with a particular opponent over a long stretch of time which can foster community. It may be a tall order to say that Super Rumble will rival Apex Legends or Fortnite. However, it is a worthy addition to Horizon Worlds and will likely be used as a benchmark for future developments. On the platform.

Multiverse has become Meta’s financial sinkhole

Super Rumble will live in Horizon Worlds, a virtual universe system that Meta has spent billions of dollars to build and make the centerpiece of the universe. Sadly, the company has found it hard to get its staff to spend time in the virtual world—and it’s even worse getting others to embrace the virtual universe.

Last year, The Guardian reported that Meta had spent over $100 billion on research and development (R&D) since the announcement of the metaverse. It was also revealed that the company spent $15 billion in the previous year.

The extent of Meta’s expenditure surfaced after the company’s shares slumped by over 25%. Critics at that time called on the company’s chief executive to abandon the expensive pivot to the metaverse. It is hard to predict if the metaverse will ever become the centerpiece of attraction but the Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t seem like someone that is ready to mark down until his dreams are actualized.
