Star Wars Outlaws was one of the games revealed at the Xbox Games showcase in June. During the reveal, the developers disclosed that the game will be released sometime in 2024. While we anticipate the release of the game, more details have emerged about the size of the world and map.
Star Wars Outlaws will be the first open-world game in the franchise’s history according to GameRant. The map size of the world of Star Wars Outlaws was compared to that of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. However, Julian Gerighty, the creative director of Star Wars Outlaws, was a bit cautious about that comparison.

“It’s a crude analogy, but the size of one planet might be [equivalent to] two of the zones in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey,” Gerighty said in an interview with Edge Magazine. “It could be two to three zones. But it’s not this sort of epic ‘the whole of England recreated’ approach.”
The reference to zones is unarguably the different regions that make up the large Odyssey map. One of the zones in the 2018 release was Attika which covered the entire of Athens and a sizable portion of its surroundings.
For now, it is still unclear how many planets will be in Star Wars Outlaws. However, Gerighty clarified that it won’t be endless like the upcoming space RPG, Starfield. The forthcoming release from Bethesda is set to feature over a thousand planets with lots of procedurally generated content.

Star Wars Outlaws will be “manageable in size for both the player and developer at Ubisoft Massive,” Gerighty said and revealed that all locations and planets are “handcrafted”. In other words, “we haven’t procedurally generated an entire planet,” he explained.
Who is the protagonist of Star Wars Outlaws?
Star Wars Outlaws is a third-person action-adventure that follows the story of Kay Vess, a scoundrel that hustles her way across the galaxy, making quick bucks from heists, a job that brings her occasionally in conflict with notorious crime families. It is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and the Return of the Jedi.
“When you think of a scoundrel, your mind goes to Han Solo, it goes to Lando, Indiana Jones, James Bond, Captain Jack Sparrow,” Gerighty said. “It was the fantasy I connected with the most in the original [Star Wars] trilogy—as a kid, I was a much, much bigger fan of Han Solo and Chewbacca than any of the others.”
Kay’s furry companion, Nix, can either attack or distract enemies, allowing her to sneak through dicey situations without being noticed. While the bulk of the combat will be on the ground, Star Wars Outlaws will feature aerial combats using spaceships too.
During the Ubisoft Forward last month, the about 10-minute gameplay showed a seamless transition from ground combat to space combat. Star Wars Outlaws seems to have borrowed elements like the ‘Wanted’ system from Grand Theft Auto and speeder bike chases.
Describing the personality of Kay, Gerighty said Massive Entertainment (the studio behind Star Wars Outlaws wanted to create a protagonist that was “a little bit more relatable” compared to Indiana Jones. “More of a rookie, a petty thief, who ends up in a situation that’s much bigger than they ever expected,” Gerighty said.
More details will likely emerge about other areas of Star Wars Outlaws as we get closer to 2024. In terms of compatibility, the game will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Ubisoft Connect.
