Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack And Expanded Roster Revealed At SDCC

Mortal Kombat 1 DLC pack

NetherRealm Studios continues to gradually unveil both the Klassic and Kameo characters for Mortal Kombat 1. The latest reveal happened at the ongoing San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). Six characters were confirmed for the Kombat Pack, a DLC that will launch after the release of the game on September 19.

The Kombat Pack will feature Takeda Takahashi, Ermac, and Quan Chi, who are all Klassic Kombatants that have previously featured in the franchise. The guest characters include Omni-Man from Invincible, Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad movie, and Homelander from The Boys.

One of the surprising reveals was Peacemaker. Although it has been previously rumored that Peacemaker will feature in Mortal Kombat 1, fans were not sure if NetherRealm will use the real character or their own version. However, the reveal showed the character had WWE Superstar John Cena’s likeness.

Cena is fully committed to playing Peacemaker and even attended an event dressed as the character. It must have been a tough call for NetherRealm to secure Cena’s likeness for the game. What is not clear yet is whether Cena will also voice the character.

Although it has long been rumored that some of these characters will feature in Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm has neither confirmed nor dispelled the rumors. However, the new announcement has validated the rumors.

With the confirmation of the new DLC Kombatants, fans may be forced to revisit the leaked old roster of complete Kombatants that have surfaced on the internet since the Summer Game Fest last month—as they struggle to fill up the missing boxes.

Mortal Kombat 1 fans continue to speculate on which players will make the final roster as well as those that will only appear in the game as Kameo. The Kombat Pack will include five Kameo fighters including Tremor, Mavado, Khameleon, Johnny Cage, and Ferra. Also, Johnny Cage will get a Jean-Claude Van Damme skin.

Apart from the DLC Kombat Pack reveal, fans of the game also got another exciting announcement at the SDCC. NetherRealm released what was dubbed the Umgadi trailer showcasing the Umgadi warriors that will be joining the game’s roster as Klassic characters.

“Umgadi are warrior priestesses selected from the first-born daughters of the outworld,” explained the Umgadi trailer narrator. “From infancy, they are trained to defend the royal family. Li Mei used to lead the Umgadi. It was on her watch that the princess’s father was murdered.”

That incident made Li Mei to fall out of favor with Umgadi warriors. When Li Mei tries to get back to the temple to help the princess, she finds Tanya standing in her way. The expanded roster also came with further expansion of the Mortal Kombat 1 story which we first saw at the Summer Game Fest.

Li Mei will be one of the playable characters in Mortal Kombat 1. She previously appeared in Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance while her last appearance in the franchise was in Mortal Kombat X where she was an NPC.

Joining Li Mei in the roster of Klassic characters are Tanya and Baraka. Tanya’s gruesome decapitation fatality was also revealed in the trailer. The trailer also did justice to Baraka by letting players understand why he looks the way he does.

“We are victims of Takat,” Baraka said in the trailer. “It disfigures, then debilitates. In time it will turn us all into bloodthirsty monsters. Death is our only release.”

Mortal Kombat 1 is a sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 and seeks to rewrite the story of the franchise, ultimately giving birth to a new Mortal Kombat Universe. The game will launch on September 19, 2023, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).
