Sony Interactive Entertainment is a longstanding UEFA Champions League sponsor—a relationship that has panned over two decades. The renewed partnership has a new commercial that is simply insane. The advert sees some of PlayStation’s iconic characters saving the day in a UEFA Champions League game. As a die-hard gamer and soccer fan, I am totally blown away.

The less than 30-second commercial started with Ellie and Joel on horseback racing down the tunnel. We would later discover that the reason for their race was to deliver the ball to the fourth official—of course, without the ball there would be no game.

Well, Ellie and Joel were not the only ones helping out to make sure that the UEFA Champions League game went on smoothly. Astro boosted to the pitch to grab the referee’s coin toss and place it on the turf. This is a tradition in soccer that helps decide which team will stay on either side of the field.

Midway through the game, an unfortunate incident saw the cables of the Jumbotron snap, and the large display screen was almost falling on the fans. Also, the snapped cable caused the Jumbotron to turn off, cutting short the excitement of viewers. Thankfully, it happened while the friendly neighborhood Spider-Men was on watch. They quickly swung by to hold the screen and restore the connection.

Kratos and Atreus were spotted in the crowd cheering their favorite team and adding life to the stadium with the blow of the Gjallarhorn. With PlayStation heroes around, absolutely nothing was big enough to interrupt the UEFA Champions League match day.

The difference between this year’s PlayStation commercial and that of 2021

PlayStation released a similar advert in 2021 that threw some of the company’s iconic characters into the UEFA Champions League match. Interestingly, Kratos and Atreus are the only characters from the 2021 commercial that returned in this year’s commercial.

The other characters that featured in the 2021 commercial were Nathan Drake (Uncharted), Ratchet & Clank, and Aloy (Horizon). The major difference I spotted between the 2021 commercial and this year’s edition was how much the characters contributed to the game. Looking at it with that eye, it was easy to see that PlayStation characters had more impact on the game in the current advert.

In the 2021 commercial, the only characters that directly impacted the game were Ratchet and Clank. There was an incident where a player got injured and Ratchet conjured a stretcher which Clank used to take the injured player out of the pitch.

The other character that can be argued to have directly impacted the game was Aloy. In a scene that looked like a player was about to be substituted into the field, we saw Aloy mapping out moves on a digital board—although it didn’t appear as if the player was paying attention.

Kratos and Atreus led the opposition team out of the tunnel while Nathan Drake scaled to the top of the stadium. In the video description, PlayStation said Nathan did that to support his team from great heights. However, I think saying he did that to get an uninterrupted view of the field would have sounded more logical.

PlayStation exclusives have been performing wonderfully. Released in November 2022, God of War: Ragnarok sold over 11 million copies worldwide in the first ten weeks after its release. PlayStation also announced on Monday, October 23 that Spider-Man 2 sold 2.5 million copies in the first 24 hours of its release.
