New PS5 Consoles Unveiled After Months Of Speculation, On Sale From November

On August 28 we reported that the Internet had exploded with PS5 Pro rumors. Well, Sony has finally announced the launch of a smaller PS5 digital edition and disc design through its blog. As the case with recent releases from the company, we believe the new PS5 design will be named in the coming weeks. For now, it’s just called a smaller PS5 design.

The announcement was made by Sid Shuman, the senior director at Sony Interactive Entertainment content communications. Its launch ahead of the holiday season is likely a strategic move by Sony to cash in on the sales boom that happens during the holiday season.

“To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility,” said Shuman. “The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and 1 TB SSD for more internal storage.”

Compared to the original PS5, the new design has 30% less volume. Also, the weight has declined by 18% for the disc edition and 24% for the digital edition. Four cover colors—including all-matte black and the deep earth collection colors—will be available for the new PS5 models. They should be available early next year and sold for $54.99. The top and bottom have glossy and matte finish respectively.

Interesting features of the new PS5 model

The sale of the new PS5 model will start in November. One feature we found interesting is that players who purchase the new PS5 Digital Edition can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to it later. The disc drive will be sold for $79.99.

According to Shuman, the new PS5 model will first launch in the United States and will be sold at select local retailers and through direct.playstation.com. The global rollout will follow in the coming months. Also, once the inventory of the old PS5 is sold out, the new model will become the only model on the market.

The recommended retail price of the PS5 with the disc drive attached is $499.99 while the price of the PS5 digital edition is $449.99. A horizontal stand will be included in the pack of the new PS5 model. However, those who prefer to have their console standing vertically will need to get a new vertical stand which will be sold for $29.99.

Another interesting alteration of the new PS5 model from the one currently available on the market is the fact that the new model will come with two USB-C ports at the front instead of one each of USB-C and USB-A that is present in the current model.

One of the two USB-C ports will be super-speed with a speed of 10Gbps while the other would be a hi-speed USB. The USB-A ports will move to the back of the consoles. There will be two of them with a speed of 10Gbps.

Obviously, the new PS5 model is a matter of convenience rather than a performance boost because, in terms of CPU and GPU, nothing seems to have changed. Nevertheless, it still feels like a convenient purchase for someone who doesn’t already have a PS5 console, rather a replacement for the old model—except you are a collector who just loves to have a piece of every generation of console.

Will you ditch your old PS5 and purchase the new one when it becomes available? Share your thoughts in the comment box below.
