Nintendo has announced that it is launching Nintendo Switch Online, an app designed for adults. The app will launch with GoldenEye 007 and Jet Force Gemini on November 30. Unlike other N64 games, Japanese users will have to separately download and launch the app to play the two classic titles.

The initiative is likely a way to bypass the country’s age rating rules that ban the sale of games rated ‘Z’ to players below 18 years. Both Jet Force Gemini (known as Star Twins in Japan) and GoldenEye 007 happen to fall under the Z rating category.

I remember playing GoldenEye back in my high school and was totally blown away by the graphics which was topnotch in that generation. The first-person shooter also ended every mission with a few seconds cutscenes that added hype to the game—albeit it doesn’t stand a chance compared to the games of today.

Z is the only rating by the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO) that is regulated by the government. Therefore, games slapped with the Z rating must be displayed separately from other software. Also, games in this category require age verification after purchase.

Earlier this year, Nintendo added GoldenEye 007 to Switch Online to the game’s library in the West. However, due to the age restriction on the games in Japan, the company’s Japanese arm likely delayed the addition of the game to the country’s library as they worked on a solution to circumvent the age restrictions.

Nintendo confirms Jet Force Gemini for Switch Online library in the West

Last Tuesday, Nintendo announced that Jet Force Gemini will be the next game to be added to Switch Online’s Nintendo 64 library in the West. The classic action game by Rare will be released in December. However, a definite date when that will happen has not been confirmed.

The game tells the story of a galactic law enforcement team known as Jet Force Gemini which has been reduced to three survivors. Arriving at planet Goldwood, the trio is tasked with rescuing a tribe of tiny creatures known as Tribals from the evil insectoid Mizar and his minions.

There are a total of 15 worlds that the player must explore and collect all the Tribals hidden in them. Each character has a unique skill that the player is meant to exploit to reach all the Tribals. It’s a challenging fun game that earned its stripes in the gaming world.

Jet Force Gemini had several cool features that made it one of the most technically advanced titles of N64 including Dolby Surround and widescreen support. Even more interesting was the fact that it didn’t require the console’s Expansion Pack for extra RAM.

Nintendo launched its Switch Online Expansion Pack tier in October 2021. With it came a library of classic Nintendo 64 games. Nintendo has also confirmed that Harvest Moon 64 and 1080o Snowboarding will be added to the library in no distant future.

When Jet Force Gemini arrives on Switch Online next month, it will increase the total N64 titles on the platform in the West to 27. Excitebike 64 and Pokémon Stadium 2 were added in August while Mario Party 3 came in October. Below is the total list of N64 titles that should be on Switch Online by December.
