The long-awaited reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 happened on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. There was so much to unpack in the hour-long reveal which dissected everything from the new innovations of the console to its new accessories and games. One thing was certain, Nintendo Switch 2 is years ahead of any competition.

Scheduled to launch on June 5, 2025, pre-orders have already started at select retailers including Smyths UK. The price of the pre-order at the UK store was £395.99 for the console and £429.99 for the console bundled with the Mario Kart World. However, the pre-orders sold out quickly.

The official pre-orders on My Nintendo Store will start on April 8. Select Nintendo Switch players in the UK and Europe will be emailed with a chance to be among the first to pre-order the new console.

“To reward the most dedicated Nintendo Switch players in Europe and the UK, the opportunity to pre-order a Nintendo Switch 2 console from My Nintendo Store will initially be offered on an invite-only basis to selected Nintendo Switch Online members,” read the message on the My Nintendo Store.

There are currently limited details on the sale of the console in America and it may have something to do with the sweeping tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. While Amazon UK has an invite-only system for pre-orders of the Nintendo Switch 2, no such option was available on Amazon US at the time of writing.

Nintendo also announced that it will be releasing a ‘Japanese/Domestic Only’ version of the Switch 2 console that will be available for purchase from general retailers. It is believed that this is likely an attempt to prevent foreign resellers from exploiting the weaker yen.

Japanese only Switch 2

The domestic version of the Nintendo Switch 2 is priced at 49,980 yen (or approximately $330). The only Nintendo accounts that can be linked to the console are those created with the region/country set to Japan. A more expensive multilingual option priced at 69,980 yen (approx. $470) will be available through the Japanese My Nintendo Store.

Important Accessories launching with Nintendo Switch 2

During the hour-long Nintendo Switch 2 showcase, several accessories were unveiled, and the majority of them will launch on the same day as the Nintendo Switch 2 while others will come on a later date. Here are some of the most intriguing accessories that will be available for the new console.

GameCube titles will be available on launch day for Switch 2. Some of the GameCube titles already confirmed for Switch 2 include:

  • Chibi-Robo
  • Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  • F-Zero GX
  • Luigi’s Mansion

Nintendo Switch 2 Camera

Switch 2 Camera

Nintendo is revolutionizing the online gameplay experience with the Switch 2 camera. The Nintendo Switch 2 will come with two USB-C ports—one at the top and the other at the bottom. The one at the top will come in handy for those who want to use the camera when docked. When connected, it overlays the player’s live feed over their game and makes it easier for streamers to capture themselves as they play their favorite titles.

Nintendo-branded MicroSD Express Card

Storage

One of the biggest limitations of the current Switch is the limited storage space (32 GB) which means that players can only store a limited number of games on their console. Switch 2 will come with 256 GB storage which is 8x that of its predecessor. Those who want expanded storage also have the option of purchasing the MicroSD Express card. The price of the Nintendo-branded 256 GB Express card is $54.99 / £49.99

Other interesting Nintendo Switch 2 hardware details

The upcoming console will have a bigger 5,220mAh lithium-ion battery which trumps (in numbers) the 4,310mAh included in the original Switch and the watered-down 3,570mAh that came with the Switch Lite. However, don’t expect the Switch 2 console to significantly outlast its predecessor during gameplay because Switch 2 is more power-hungry, thanks to the improved screen and game graphics.

Nintendo says the battery of the upcoming console is expected to last between 2 and 6.5 hours. According to the Japanese gaming giant, “These are rough estimates. The battery life will depend on the games you play.”

In comparison, the battery life of the first Switch was 4.5 to 9 hours while that of Switch Lite was 3 to 7 hours. The company said the upcoming console will take around 3 hours to fully charge when in Sleep mode.

Third-party titles coming to Switch 2
