The Last Of Us Part II Remastered No Return Mode Will Have 10 Playable Characters

The Last Of Us Part II Remastered No Return Mode Will Have 10 Playable Characters

The Last of Us Part II Remastered will launch on January 19, 2024, but pre-orders will start today. One of the features that is most talked about in the upcoming remaster is the roguelike survival No Return Mode. Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment have released a new trailer to highlight some of its features.

Although it was previously revealed that The No Return Mode will feature characters that are playable for the first time in the history of the franchise, the number and names of the playable characters have been elusive. Only Ellie, Abby, Dina, Jesse, Lev, and Tommy were previously mentioned.

However, from the No Return Mode trailer, we have gleaned that there will be 10 playable characters. The full list of characters that are playable in the No Return Mode are;

  • Ellie
  • Dina
  • Jesse
  • Tommy
  • Joel
  • Abby
  • Lev
  • Yara
  • Mel
  • Manny

Each of the players will have a unique playstyle. For example, Dina’s playstyle is crafting, Jesse’s playstyle is resourcefulness which means you will get unique items at the trading post, Yara’s playstyle is teamwork and can pair with Lev.

Manny on the other hand is the king of Armory and you will get 50% more parts and 150% max health when you use him for your survival run.

No Return Mode will be tied to the main game

Although No Return Mode is a separate mode that can be accessed through the menu, some of its features will be tied to the main game. For example, some characters in the No Return Mode will be locked until you get to a certain point in the game. We want to assume that some characters or features will be unlocked as you progress through the run.

Likewise, some levels, weapons, and skills will be locked until you reach a certain level in the game. A few of the playable levels were showcased in the trailer and tracked through an investigation board. Some of the levels will feature humans while others will be dominated by zombies taken over by the cordyceps plague. Some of the levels we gleaned from the trailer include;

  • Hardware Store
  • Forest
  • State Street
  • Hospital
  • Hospital Basement

Although there seem to be different playable routes, all of the routes will end with a boss fight. The path will reset each time you die. For example, in the trailer, the player started from the Hardware Store and fought to the last level which was the hospital basement.

However, when killed they returned to the beginning of the investigation board. However, instead of starting from the Hardware Store, the level at the beginning was now a Gas Station. Naughty Dog highlighted this point in the trailer description.

“Experience The Last of Us Part II Remastered’s deep combat via an entirely new single-player mode! Survive as long as you can in each run, as you choose your path through a series of randomized encounters featuring different foes and memorable locations from throughout Part II, all culminating in tense boss battles.”

If there was ever a doubt about how that feature would work, the trailer would have laid it to rest. The fact that players have the freedom to choose their path is cool since players can decide to play the run through locations they are most familiar with.

The Last of Us Part 1 was released on PC in March this year, nearly a decade since the game debuted on PS3. To date, Naughty Dog has not disclosed any plans to launch the sequel on PC. Perhaps it will take another decade from the first release date for that to happen. See the No Return Mode trailer below.
