The Early Access trailer for Off The Grid was released by Gunzilla Games on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. While the third-person shooter holds great promise in terms of graphics and gameplay, the story defies morality—even for a long-time gamer like myself who believes games should not be taken seriously.

Off The Grid’s Story Defies Every Morality, Even For A Video Game

According to the trailer which was a mix of gameplay and cinematics, volunteers are decapitated and their limbs replaced with cyber limbs before they are shipped to an island where they battle other teams to death. It was also revealed in the trailer that neutralized soldiers can be rebuilt, even from just tissues.

“Equip your team with cutting-edge cyber limbs, unleash devastating abilities, and outsmart your rivals as you fight for the ultimate prize—hard-earned loot,” the developers explained in the description of the early access trailer. “Every battle is a chance to strategize, switch tactics on the fly, and prove you’ve got what it takes to rise to the top.”

The dark cyberpunk world was crafted by Neill Blomkamp, the South African and Canadian director behind the sci-fi movie, District 9. Off The Grid is billed as the future of Battle Royale.

The Extraction Royale has both PVP and PVE modes. In the PVP mode, you have to shoot through 150-player melee. According to Gunzilla Games, Off The Grid will feature a 60-hour narrative campaign, “which you’ll take part in as the battle royale rages on around you”.

There are over 30 cyber limbs to choose from. Cyber limbs can be acquired through different methods. You can shoot off your opponent’s cyber limbs and run away with them or get them from crates scattered around the map.

In terms of arsenal, the game boasts over 300 weapon combinations. Each of the weapons is fully customizable. To make sure the weapons are true to life and have incredible details, the developers made use of 3D scanning technology.

While Off The Grid looks promising in all regards (and is already being compared to CoD), I am totally shaken by the storyline that defies all sense of morality. I am curious to know what other players will think about the game. Off The Grid is available on PC via Epic Store, PlayStation, and Xbox. See the early access trailer below.
