Todd Howard, the director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, revealed that official Starfield modding tools will come in 2024. However, he was not specific about the actual time of the year modders should expect the tools.
The official Starfield mod tools will be a continuation of a long-standing Bethesda tradition that started with the Creation Kit that was released for Skyrim over a decade ago. At that time, the kit was well-received.
Since its release, Starfield has become one of the most talked about games—for several reasons. The massive RPG has also had mostly positive reviews from critics and fans. One of the appeals of Starfield has been the brilliant modding potential.

Howard revealed the intention of the studio to release Starfield mod tools next year during an interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu. Howard said the Starfield mod tools will allow modders to do almost anything when it is released.
“When the mods are ready, you will be able to do almost anything as we have done in the past,” Howard said, “and the mods will be supported next year, but we will do it in a big way because we love it too.”
Just like the vagueness of the official Starfield mod tools, Howard was also not specific about the upcoming Shattered Space DLC for Starfield. During the interview, he said, “When it will be released is a secret”.
Starfield modders are already having fun with the game
Although Howard has promised that the official Starfield mod tool will be available next year, there are already lots of interesting mods available for the game. One of the most popular Starfield mods is the one by Kboykboy that turned the game into Star Wars.
The Starfield mod replaced the UC police uniform with Stormtrooper armor. Kboykboy has ambitious plans for the mod. Their next step is to replace all the UC armor with imperial versions. They also want to replace all Freestar armor with Rebel versions and replace Starfield weapons with those from Star Wars.
“After the Creation Kit is released, if I am still super into Starfield, then maybe more,” Kbokboy added.

If Kboykboy is able to pull that off, it would technically turn Starfield into a Star Wars video game. Besides the Kbokboy mod, there are other Starfield mods that bring Star Wars spaceships like the Millennium Falcon to Starfield. There is another that added a Rebel Alliance spacesuit patch.
In the past, Bethesda games have had lots of Star Wars mods. Therefore, Starfield mods would not come as a surprise to many. Wesley Yin-Poole of IGN predicts that it is only a matter of time before modders will also transform Starfield cities—and possibly planets—into Star Wars once Bethesda makes the official Starfield mod tools public.
The possibility of a Starfield mod tool was already there since 2021 when Howard said they plan to “have full mod support like our previous games. Our modding community has been with us for 20 years. We love what they do and hope to see more make a career out of it.”
PCGamesN learned that a Fallout and Skyrim modder was hired to work on official Starfield clutter and in-game lighting. There are likely other modders working on the game too.
Starfield hit 330,000 concurrent players
Data on SteamDB shows that so far, the highest number of concurrent players that have been recorded on Starfield is 330,723. That record was reached on Sunday 10 September 2023. The record makes Starfield the most played game on the platform this month so far with Geometry Dash and Fae Farm coming in on second and third positions.
