Palworld continues its fairytale run. Since its launch on January 19, the game has sold 15 million copies on Steam and attracted 10 million players on Xbox bringing the total player count to over 25 million. That effectively puts the game’s sales numbers ahead of some of last year’s best releases, including Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder which was the fastest-selling in the history of the franchise.
This may not be a good comparison because Palworld is sold for $30 while the other games mentioned above are sold between $60 to $70. Nevertheless, it is still a huge achievement for an indie developer whose last game, Craftopia, sold around 590,000 units.
The revelation was made in the company’s latest update on Thursday, February 22, 2024, through the game’s official X handle. Palworld’s achievement in a month is a rare sight for an indie developer—and Pocketpair will surely be proud of all they have accomplished.

“🎉Total number of players exceeds 25 million🎉” the developer announced on X. “It’s been a month since #Palworld was released, thank you! Steam: 15 million players. Xbox: 10 million players. We will continue to prioritize fixing bugs and preventing further cheating. Thank you for your continued support!”
The number of Palworld copies sold on Xbox is not clear
Pocketpair did not disclose the number of copies the game has sold on Xbox. That is not surprising since the game is also available on Xbox Game Pass. Ultimately, not everyone who played the game through Xbox purchased a copy. Game Pass subscribers can play the game without purchasing a copy.
That explains why Pocketpair used ‘players’ rather than ‘copies’ when discussing the number of players on Xbox. Our guess is that only a small portion of the 10 million players on Xbox purchased the game while the vast majority likely experienced the game through Game Pass.

As of December 2022, Pokémon Red/Green/Blue had sold over 31.38 million units. Although the new figures suggest slowing sales, if Palworld sustains the tempo for another three months, it will likely surpass the sales numbers of Pokémon Red/Green/Blue which has become the game’s rival.
The weekend after Palworld’s launch, several Pokémon fans led a social media campaign against the Pocketpair’s breakout release. Pokémon fans claimed Palworld copied most of its monsters from Nintendo’s classic. They compared everything from model sizes to the physical appearance of the characters.

In the days that followed that allegation, Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe granted interviews where he stressed that Palworld was different from Pokémon and that the company has double-checked with their legal team to make sure there were no issues. The Pokemon Company said they would investigate.

At its peak, Palworld attracted over 2.1 million concurrent players on Steam, making it the second most concurrently played game on the platform. However, the number of the game’s players has slowed down in recent weeks. The game had 228,948 reviews on Steam at the time of writing this post and 94% of that number was very positive.
