Path of Exile 2 launched to a massive Early Access success judging by the number of players willing to pay $30 for a game that will eventually be released free-to-play. During a weekend stacked with free game releases on Steam, Path of Exile 2 sparkled.
For comparison, the first Path of Exile peaked at 229,337 concurrent players. However, at the time of writing this post on December 9, Path of Exile 2 has already crossed 578,569 concurrent players, beating Marvel Rivals which peaked at 480,990, according to SteamDB.

It is highly anticipated that the number of concurrent players who’ll tune into Path of Exile 2 will rise when the game becomes available for free. The Steam reviews for the game have also been Very Positive.
Path of Exile 2 is a hack-and-slash action RPG developed and published by Grinder Gear Games. The first installment of the game was released on October 23, 2013, and was also very positively reviewed. The second installment is coming over a decade later and builds on the success of the first.
“Path of Exile 2 is a next-generation free-to-play Action RPG from Grinder Gear Games, featuring co-op for up to six players,” read the official blurb. “Set years after the original Path of Exile, you will return to the dark world of Wraeclast and seek to end the corruption that is spreading.”
Developers at Grinder Gear Games said over one million accounts redeemed Path of Exile 2 early access. Some players who were yet to log into the game also left positive reviews, signaling a high anticipation for the title.
Multiple reviews heaped praises on the game and highlighted how the developers have improved or preserved almost everything that made the first game stand out including the massive skill tree.
Path of Exile 2 milestones defied login issues
Usually when players struggle to log into a game because of server overload, what follows is a barrage of negative comments. That has not been the case with Path of Exile 2. The number of early access redemptions overwhelmed the developers who issued a warning on social media about potential server queues.
“We’ve just reached 1 million Early Access redemptions,” the developer announced on X. “The support you have all shown for Path of Exile 2 Early Access is far beyond anything we could have ever predicted. However, we want to be upfront with you all and let you know there may very well be queues over the weekend.”
In a video accompanying the announcement, the game’s developer Jonathan Rogers explained how massive PoE2 has been and how they didn’t prepare to have so many players online at the same time.

“We really didn’t expect to have more than one million people online at the same time,” Rogers explained. “We’ve already ordered way more cloud capacity, and those servers will be coming online very soon. But I do have some concerns about issues with the back-end. We quite frankly don’t know what our back-end services are going to be able to handle as we go above a million users.”
“Now, we’ve added more database shards, scaling everything we have up as far as it’ll go, but we’re really not sure what kind of limits we might hit. We never expected things to go this big during EA. I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you guys so much for believing in this project. If we do run into server issues at launch, just know that we’re going to be working as hard as we can to solve them.”
