Mark Cerny kicked off the show by introducing what was added to PS5, which includes rendering up to 120Hz display, 8 Zen2 CPU cores that enable high-speed complex gameplay and allow up to a hundred characters on screen, and a custom SSD that loads games at a fast speed. However, he mentioned that developers have been asking for more graphics power.
“Creators have made amazing use of the hardware capabilities but when I talk to them, I do hear about their desire for more graphics performance,” Cerny said.

“The dreams of developers are bigger than can be supported by 60 frames per second and that leads to an aspect of modern gaming that we are all familiar with, Graphics Modes.”
Cerny noted that choosing between Fidelity and Performance mode can be a difficult choice for players. Fidelity mode emphasizes visuals through high-resolution rendering. Performance modes, on the other hand, emphasize frames and controls and choose to run at 60 frames per second by lowering the graphical details. Cerny said players choose Performance mode three-quarters of the time.
He mentioned that PlayStation5 Pro was designed to remove (or narrow) the scenario where players had to choose between performance mode and fidelity mode. PS5 Pro graphics feels like running a game in Fidelity Mode in traditional PS5. The PS5 Pro improves over the traditional PS5 in three ways namely:
Larger GPU (67% more computing power) and 28% faster RAM leading to rendering that is 45% faster
Advanced Ray Tracing: a streamlined and accelerated approach that allows calculations of the rays at double or triple the speed of the traditional PS5.
Custom hardware for machine learning called the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)—AI-driven Upscaling that analyses the game pixel by pixel and adds more details to make the graphics smoother, which boosts the effects of the game’s resolution.
