Sony Published a PlayStation commercial several hours ago which saw buildings transforming into play platforms and the iconic PlayStation symbols popping up on street lights and signages. However, one important detail that also came with the commercial is the price of the PS5 Slim but Sony changed its mind afterward.
“PlayStation 5 console starting at $379.99 MSRP,” Sony revealed at the end of the commercial, adding that “offer ends 12/24”. The new price means Sony has shaved off $70 from the PS5 Slim.
Interestingly, at the time of writing, the new price has yet to reflect on direct.playstation.com. The product still has the price tag of $449.99 on Sony’s PlayStation Direct online store.
In its latest earnings call, Sony confirmed that it shipped 3.8 million PS5 consoles in the second quarter ended in September, down 29% compared to the same time last year. That figure takes the total PS5 sales-to-date to 65.5 million. This puts the PS5 console a few million behind the PS4 at the same period of its lifecycle (67.5 million units shipped).
Sony expects its PlayStation business to post record operating income in the current fiscal year, partly due to strong sales of third-party games and increasing PlayStation Plus subscriptions. Also, they plan to focus on a mix of single-player and live service games henceforth.
Before publishing this post, we discovered that Sony had deleted the first published video and reuploaded it. This time, the section showing that the price of the PS5 Slim was discounted has now been removed.
Our best guess is that the promo was announced way too early. Perhaps, it is a Black Friday deal that will later come into effect in the coming days. We will keep you posted on any changes to the PS5 Slim price.
