Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart PC specs and exciting features
Since it was announced that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart would be coming to PC, fans of the game have been eager to know whether it would support ray tracing as well as what other technologies it would bring. Those answers were provided by Richard van der Laan, the senior programmer at Nixxes Software.
“To enable quick loading and instant transition between dimensions, the game needs to be able to load assets quickly,” said van der Laan. “DirectStorage ensures quick loading times, and GPU decompression is used at high graphics settings to stream assets in the background while playing. Traditionally, this decompression is handled by the CPU, but at a certain point, there is an advantage to letting the GPU handle this, as this enables a higher bandwidth for streaming assets from storage to the graphics card.”

DirectStorage was created to fully maximize the speed of fast PCIe NVMe SSDs. However, it also works with SATA SSDs as well as traditional hard disk drives. In simple terms, regardless of the type of your storage device, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will utilize the same technology for loading data.
“For Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PC, we added adaptive streaming on live measurement of the available hardware bandwidth,” explained Alex Bartholomeus, principal programmer. “This allows us to tailor the texture streaming strategy for the best possible texture streaming on any configuration.”
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will feature ray-traced reflections on PC
The presence of ray-traced reflections is arguably one of the biggest announcements about the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Also, ray-traced shadows have been added for natural outdoor light—but that is not all.
To further enhance the realism of the game, Ray-Traced Ambient Occlusion (RTAO) has been added too and players will have the freedom to choose from various quality levels. Graphics programmer Menno Bil explained Ambient Occlusion (AO) as a technique used in games to simulate the effect of ambient light (light reflected from other surfaces) on a scene.
“This effect mostly appears at creases, cracks, and corners where surfaces are close to each other,” explained Bil. “Commonly used AO techniques are Screen Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO) and Horizon-Based Ambient Occlusion (HBAO+). These are not very demanding on the hardware, but they do not provide physically accurate results. RTAO utilizes ray-tracing further to enhance the realism of ambient occlusion in the game.”
