There have been rumors that developers hate working with the Xbox Series S because of its low specs. Contrary to that, Warhorse Studios’ global PR manager, Tobias Stolz-Zwilling (Sir Tobi) said the studio was able to make Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 better by working with Xbox Series S.

In a recent interview on Iron Lords Podcast, Sir Tobi made several revelations including disclosing that the sequel took 6 years to make. Comparing Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 to the first, Sir Tobi said they tried to fit in as many features as possible in the first game but the consoles at that time were lagging behind.

“The original plan was that KCD2 will be KCD1 plus 25%,” Sir Tobi said. “A bit bigger in map, a bit bigger in questing, a bit bigger in whatever. And we absolutely failed that because it’s almost doubled in everything.”
“It took us six years. The real development started in 2019. That was when the whole team shifted to KCD2. It became way bigger than we were telling ourselves in the beginning.”
When Sir Tobi said that Series S helped the development of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, it was a eureka moment for the hosts of the Iron Lords Podcast who highlighted that it sounded contrary to what they had heard about the console with many developers saying that it holds back development.
“[Series S] is the weakest of the four,” Sir Tobi said. “That’s not even a secret. But since you have to dial down on a few things and have to be clever about what you can in the programming, in the code, and so on, you will be able to save memory here and there. Some of these optimizations to the S benefited the other consoles as well.”
Cross-progression is not planned for Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 because Sir Tobi said they couldn’t find a way to make it happen, just like their initial plan of making the second game a continuation of the first. You can watch Tobi explain how KCD2 benefited from Series S below.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 was published by Deep Silver on February 4, 2025. The game enjoyed positive reception with a Metacritic score of 88 across all the platforms. The game sold 1 million copies within 24 hours of launch.
