In less than 24 hours to the launch of a Modern Warfare Remastered mod by H2 Multiplayer Mod (aka H2M-Mod), the developers announced that they received a “Cease & Desist order” from Activision Publishing regarding the project and had to shut it down.
Although H2M-Mod said in their X post that they “are complying with this order and shutting down all operations immediately and permanently”, the Mod file has surfaced online across different Discord servers.

Several hundred people have already played the mod. At the time of writing, 25,828 people have already downloaded the 19.3 GB mod file. In anticipation of the H2M mod, players had purchased Modern Warfare Remastered which pushed the 2017 release to the top 5 best-selling games on Steam.
Following the cease & desist order, a lot of players have lashed out at Activision. Modern Warfare Remastered is currently being review-bombed on Steam. The game’s review is now “Overwhelmingly Negative” according to 2,688 new reviews. Some players who have not exceeded the 2 hours of playtime are already refunding the game.
“Didn’t even know H2M was a thing,” wrote SleepyPajamas on Steam, “Activision giving the team for the mod a Cease and Desist is the most stupidest way to find out it existed. Why Activision… just why…”
“I wasted $20 because I was hoping that I could get to play H2M mod since Activision doesn’t want to make a functional multiplayer to a remaster of one of their bestselling games in the franchise. Just for me to get robbed,” wrote AFKrob.
“The game publisher sent a cease and desist to a mod that they themselves couldn’t produce on their own. Not only that, but they waited for their 50% sale on this game to be over so that they could pull as much money as they could with their greedy little hands from the fan base. I already own this game on Xbox so if I really wanted to I could go play this game on my Xbox but I chose to give my money to a game publisher that doesn’t respect their fan base. Don’t buy this game.”
A petition to stop Activision from killing the mod titled “Let H2M-Mod live in peace” has already garnered over 7,800 signatures. The petition which was started by H2M Now said, “Instead of sending a cease-and-desist letter, Activision should thank the creators for dedicating countless hours to developing such an impressive mod for their game”.
How to play Modern Warfare Remastered Mod by H2M
If you bought Modern Warfare Remastered in anticipation of the H2M mod, well, you can still play the game if you are willing to do the “little” work involved. The first step is to head over to GoFile.io and download the 19.3 GB H2M mod file. It is important to note that publicly available files may put your system at risk. So, always download files with caution.

Also, download the server link from Google Drive. The JSON file titled “favorite” will allow you to connect the Modern Warfare Remastered H2M mod to live servers. These files are everything you need to enjoy the H2M Mod for Modern Warfare Remastered. Once you have downloaded the files, follow the steps below to get your mod working.
- Step 1: Extract the “h2m.zip” file
- Step 2: Open Steam directory for Modern Warfare Remastered (Steam > SteamApps> Common > Modern Warfare Remastered)
- Step 3: Copy or cut the content of h2m file into the Modern Warfare Remastered directory (you may be asked to replace some files. Click on Accept each time)
- Step 4: Locate “h2m-20240815T230815Z-001” in the h2m file and open it
- Step 5: Copy or cut H2M-Mod.exe (and everything else) into the Modern Warfare Remastered directory folder
- Step 6: Copy or cut the JSON text file into the “player2” folder under the Modern Warfare Remastered directory
- Step 7: Launch H2M-Mod.exe
- Step 8: Once the game launches, select “Filter Servers” button on the bottom of the HUD to populate the server list.
How to fix “Out of Memory” error on H2M mod
Some players are getting the “Out of Memory” error when they try to play the H2M mod. If you are one of those experiencing this error, here is how you can fix it.

- Step 1: Win + R > msconfig > Boot (tab) > Check Safe Boot (Network), Apply, Reboot (Your computer will run slowly, be patient)
Step 2: Launch Campaign (this generates the contents of the “players2” folder for the campaign), close out once it successfully launches
Step 3: Launch Multiplayer (this generates config_mp.cfg), Cancel the shader download, Options > Graphics > Video > Cache Shaders (DISABLED)
Step 4: Win + R > msconfig > Boot (tab) > Uncheck Safe Boot (Network), Apply, Reboot
Step 5: Launch Campaign, press no for any prompted changes, including Safe Mode, and close out of the game once it launches
Step 6: Launch Multiplayer, press no for any prompted changes, including Safe Mode. Be sure to set your graphics settings before playing
