Sony Launched the PS5 Pro with the promise of eliminating the bottleneck where players had to choose between Performance and Fidelity modes. In other words, players should expect the best performance and graphics. However, some PS5 Pro users are complaining that some games have significantly worse graphics on the Pro.
Two games fingered in the controversy are Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 and EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Interestingly, both games are marked ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ on the PlayStation Store. The issue was blamed on the Pro’s upscaling technology, PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution).

For about a week on the Silent Hill 2 Reddit page, players have outlined several issues with the game on the PS5 Pro. They particularly pointed out that the game has Performance and Quality graphics options—the same problem Sony said the PS5 Pro will eliminate.
According to comments on the Reddit page, the Quality mode still runs at 30 frames per second with an identical graphics as the game on the traditional PS5 while the Performance mode now has an odd shimmering effect on some surfaces—particularly on trees and puddles.
“I wanted to play my NG+ runs on PS5 Pro. I beat it the first time on standard PS5. But tonight I’m just kinda sad lol. Quality mode is still 30fps. Performance mode is 60 fps, but THIS time, all reflections are broken,” wrote one player who switched to Performance mode mid-game, calling it false advertising.
“It looks like the fuzzy wall texture effects from SH3 on PS2. This game is advertised as PS5 Pro Enhanced on the store. You cannot just advertise something that is false. Don’t do that. This game has not been touched. This is the standard PS5 executable running directly on PS5 Pro hardware without so much as a glance by the developers. I hope a patch is on the way, but this is just a shameful experience, I’ve been excited all day to boot this up on my new Pro after a long week at work.”
Digital Foundry also published a video that claimed the enhanced Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is suffering from “severe image quality problems” on the PS5 Pro. The media noted shimmers on the PS5 Pro through a side-by-side comparison.

“If you look at this side-by-side, you can see just how unstable the game appears now with PSSR in the Performance mode,” said Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie in the video. “I would personally go as far as to say it looks dramatically worse than the old Performance mode here.”
Both Bloober Team and EA have acknowledged the problem and said they are working to get it resolved. It is not clear how soon these issues will be fixed or whether the fix will come as a game patch or a system upgrade.
While some gamers are becoming impatient with the situation, more games are being enhanced for the PS5 Pro. The latest game to get a PS5 Pro enhancement is The Callisto Protocol by Striking Distance and Krafton. It promises 8K resolution at 30fps. See the announcement trailer below.
