Previously, gamers would have to look for other ways to trade in their old consoles if they wanted to purchase a new one. That will change soon as Sony is set to start offering trade-in and trade-up options on the official PlayStation store under a new tab called “Certified Refurbished”.
For knowledge sake, refurbished consoles are pre-owned consoles that were returned to Sony by the owner for several reasons which may include upgrading to a newer console or because of technical issues they could not fix. These consoles are no longer considered new because their boxes have been opened.

Sony claimed that their certified refurbished products are “as good as new”. They further added that the products have been “extensively cleaned, tested, and ready for a brand-new home”. The refurbished consoles also include a 12-month warranty.
“You will receive a product that works like new with genuine PlayStation replacement parts that have been thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and tested,” said Sony.
“All Certified Refurbished will come with the necessary accessories, cables, and manuals, and are packaged in their own branded Certified Refurbished packaging.”
According to the listing on the PlayStation store, the refurbished disk edition will be sold for $399.99 while the digital edition will be sold for $349.99. Refurbished controllers are also sold for $59.99 for the classic white and black or $64.99 for other exotic colors.
Previously, PlayStation offered trade-ins for the PS4 consoles. It allowed gamers to trade in their PS4 console and get up to $150 off a PS5 through Back Market. PS5 Trade-in is also offered on Back Market. We tried to trade in PS5 Digital Edition with 825GB storage and 1 controller. The best offer we got was $283.
How to make Sony’s PS5 Pro more affordable
After the reveal of the PS5 Pro, one of the burning topics in the mouth of many was the $700 price tag on the console, $200 more than the Classic and PS5 Slim consoles. Well, thanks to competitive trade-in, some players are already saving up to get the next PS5 console iteration.

In one post we spotted on X, the owner of a classic PS5 console claimed he had traded it in with GameStop for $410. That means he only needs $290 more to afford the PS5 Pro when it becomes available on November 7, 2024. However, there are new claims that GameStop crashed the price of the PS5 trade-in after the announcement of the PS5 Pro.
This deal was just way too good to pass up at @gamestop. 2 months without a PS5 tho. But worth it when I get that PS5 Pro for $410 less out of pocket 🫡 pic.twitter.com/DAlGGdow3D

From Back Market to GameStop, gamers have more ways to trade in their old consoles. When Sony’s trade-in option comes online, we believe they will likely offer better deals. The increasing competition in the niche will also likely force all the outlets offering trade-in to increase their offer.
Once you can trade in your old console for $200 and above, getting the PS5 Pro will be akin to buying your regular console. The crashed price of refurbished classic PS5 consoles may also mean that more gamers worldwide can now afford the console—meaning more sales numbers for Sony, right? Guess we have to wait for their Q4 2024 report to find out.
