If you ever thought Xbox was throwing in the towel in the console competition, Xbox Games Showcase 2024 will show you how wrong you are. The company paraded a stunning lineup of games including first-ever gameplay trailers of South of Midnight and Perfect Dark.
There were also cinematic trailers of new games and expansions to existing games including Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred and Starfield: Shattered Space. Some other games that have been previously revealed like Fable and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle got a new story trailer.
However, in this post, we will highlight two interesting games that got gameplay trailers, South of Midnight and Perfect Dark.
South of Midnight gameplay trailer
South of Midnight was revealed earlier this year but players weren’t sure of what to expect. However, the new 4-minute gameplay trailer revealed at Xbox Games Showcase 2024 has given players an idea of what is to come.
The protagonist in South of Midnight is a Black female called Hazel. She is accompanied by a talkative Catfish who you’ll be stuck with throughout the game.

“Following a Category 5 hurricane, Hazel has lost her mother, but gained once-dormant powers of Weaving, a magical ability that allows her to rework the tapestry of energy that makes up the universe,” explained Joe Skrebels in Xbox Wire.
“Reality itself has begun to fray, leading her deeper and deeper into a magical realist world, where folktale creatures have sprung to life, and corruption is overtaking the ruins left in the hurricane’s path.”
In the South of Midnight gameplay trailer, we see Hazel fighting huge monsters by weaving magic together. the gameplay trailer ended when Hazel visited a church and rang the tower bell attracting a giant crocodile with live vegetation on its back.

“So the way we built the environment is because we want players to follow the narrative, but have more to sink their teeth into – you can sometimes see some more open, hub-like sections,” explained the game director Jasmin Roy.
Perfect Dark gameplay trailer
Perfect Dark is a reboot of the classic Secret Service game. The first-person action throws players into Joanna Dark’s secret and dangerous missions. The gameplay trailer showcased some of the weapons and enemies that players will encounter in the game.
Co-developed by The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics, Perfect Dark is set in near-future Cairo. While the team borrowed inspiration from the previous release, they also crafted an entirely new story and universe in this reboot.
“Joanna is being sent into Cairo to find and apprehend Daniel Carrington, and we see her enter a district called Garden City (and an area of Cairo in real life, too),” explained Joe Skrebels of Xbox Wire.
“We see Joanna find a hideout used by Carrington, who infiltrates Joanna’s AR system and begins to expose more information, and even more questions about the bigger mysteries in Cairo. Joanna will need to learn who can be trusted, and who might be working against her own goals, and Carrington’s role will be a major part of that.”
Secret agents rely a lot on gadgets and Joanna has a lot of them in her arsenal. One of the gadgets showcased in the trailer is a tool she uses to analyze NPC voices. She also uses it to create “deepfakes” to trick security doors with voice locks.

“Gadgets can be used for misdirection and manipulation, but we also see that Joanna can use a tool to scan an NPC and learn details about them – it wouldn’t be a secret agent story without some fieldwork, and the developers tell me that parsing the world, around you will be a key part of understanding how to tackle your objectives,” Skrebels explained.
